And CBS Sportsline's take....5 superconferences. There is no doubt all this merging will squeeze out some people (Big East....maybe Big 12) and put us closer to an end of season playoff.

I'm amazed at how quickly the media became convinced the Big Ten was going from 11 to 16....talk had been on adding just one or three but it seems almost like a foregone conclusion that they are going to 16 and that the SEC will follow suit.
The Big East is near death. The ACC raid of 5-6 years ago set the table for them being at the bottom of the pecking order when they were caught umprepared and now they just sit and wait. It's been no secret that WVU has craved the SEC or ACC since that raid. Syracuse nearly went then. Pitt, Rutgers, and U.Conn. won't even hesitate if tendered a Big Ten offer.
Let's just see this get done quickly....it will put us on the path to a college football playoff sooner rather than later.

I'm curious what happens to the Idaho's and North Texas's of the world.

I'm not sure it would be any different than now. Idaho or North Texas could go undefeated and win every game by 40+ points and have no shot at a National Title. They may get to go to a BCS bowl game but they still will probably have an option similar to that in a playoff format. To be completely honest I don't understand why teams like Idaho and North Texas are so hell bent on being a FBS school. Why not drop down to FCS and at least have a shot at playing for a title. Just a thought.

Re: KC Star Article on Expansion
Because football at most of the I-AA schools is an after thought. Its like having season tickets to the AHL.
I dont know what happened to UNT. They won the conference 4 years in a row, and their HC decided he was done recruiting. After a season or two of that nonsense, Villarreal fired him. Theres been a lot of backlash over that decision but you cannot run a program where you dont recruit. He got very lazy and the AD pulled the plug. When they hired Dodge I was optimistic bc of the gimmick offense causing matchup problems for their opponents. Only problem is that Dodge couldnt care less about defense. Now, they are easily in the bottom 5 of I-A football, and theres no hope in sight. I cant believe they let Dodge come back for another season, but who wants this job?
When I was going there in the middle of the decade, there were a lot of rumors about UNT going to the WAC as soon as the basketball program picked up. Thats why they hired a new coach who HAS gotten them a lot better, but where is the WAC invite?
The problem NOW at UNT is that they are competing locally with an upstart SMU and a TCU team who is better now than ever before. Those kids are not going to pick UNT over SMU/TCU if they have offers to them. In addition, UNT has adequate facilities but they are not excellent. I'm not sure this is a quick fix anymore, and w/ these expansion rumors running rampant, they might sneak into the Mtn West/WAC, but once those conferences get raided, I can see the conferences just merging altogether.
