Aaah, NOW I know why JokePa can't recruit anymore...
Read the last paragraph of the article on this link:
http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/10214/1077114-100.stm
I am sensing multi-million dollar endorsement deals with Charmin, Glade, Dockers, Fruit of the Loom, Fiber One snack bars, Immodium, and Depends. Eat your heart out Aqua Penn Spring Water!
Surely, being the generous man that he is, Joe will donate all of his endorsement earnings to the PSU library!
I also LOVE the quote where Jokepa says he'll coach until "someone else thinks he can't"...Well, Curley and Spanier don't think he can and he told them both to hit the road when they tried to get his resignation/retirement a few years ago.
In terms of Paturdo's lack of involvement in recruiting, that is addition by subtraction...Imagine that decrepit old man walking (or being wheeled) into a potential recruit's home and hearing him start stammering, pausing, and stuttering over words, all while preaching the GRAND EXPERIMENT (and sweeping under the rug the infinite number of criminal acts committed by players and glaring disgraces such as Gus Felder, Curtis Enis, Floyd Wedderburn, etc.) The Grand Experiment is nothing more than fabricated mythology created in JoePa's own mind. How could any recruit or family possibly take him seriously? YOU'RE BETTER OFF SENDING BIG RED, TB, GALEN, OR EVEN JAYPA into the homes and schools of potential recruits.
All joking aside, I watched his interview at B10 media day today and the man is in an absolute pathetic, sad decline mentally, physically, and emotionally. He looks in poor health, and he's repeating himself, stammering, hesitating, even more than he usually has over the past decade. Joe has been losing his mind slowly but surely over the past 10 years or so. He looks like he needed to be rolled out on a gurney to the closest convalescent home.
Joe Paterno is a textbook case of a classic power mongering, egomaniac staying on the job about 15 years too long. Some aspiring psychiatrist could write a case study/PhD dissertation on Joe Paterno and earn his doctorate.
Indeed, Joe Paterno is embarassing your university. If you are a PSU fan, you absolutely have be concerned about the image that he's creating for Penn State, as well as about his poor health.
Watch that interview and remember that Joe Paterno is the face of your university. You have got to be kidding me. Please tell me you're not serious. Wait, everyone loves the emperor's new clothes, right?

I have been saying it for years. It really is a shame he still thinks he should be the coach at Penn State. He is really being selfish right now. You can sit and say he is afraid of dying and so on, but no one is saying he won't be a part of Penn State football. Go to practices. Be around the team. But, for god's sakes turn the team over to someone. Today's press conference is just further proof that he can't handle the day to day operations of a coach and hasnt been able to in over 10 years. As a coach these days, you need to be on the road beating down recruits doors, in the spotlight, fiery. Joepa is holding his school back right now due to his own selfish wants. ?You can say he's earned that right, but I strongly disagree. He's earned the right to be anything he wants at Penn State aside from head coach. He is the reason Penn State is what it is today, but head coach at 83 is a little bit much.

Kirk, we finally agree on something. JoePa has long outlived his usefulness. The perfect time for him to retire would've been after their unbeaten '94 season. Ever since then, it's been downhill.
Joe is selfish, and his pathetic presence is an absolute discomfiture and reflects poorly on PSU. It's really a shame, because although I have always disliked Joe and always thought he was sanctimonious and patronizing, there was a time when I respected him. There was a time when his Grand Experiment was working to some degree. A man who once had at least some dignity has become nothing more than a cartoon on the face of the university.
The football program is out of control in terms of player decorum and PSU's academic standards in accepting partial and non-qualifiers as he preaches the grand experiment are laughable.
Joe is not only selfish, arrogant, stubborn, and sanctimonious but he is a fraud, cantankerous, miserable, and a true embarassment to the university.
Unfortunately for PSU fans like you, Paterno does what he wants and when he wants to do it and calls the shots at the university. Barring Paterno actually committing a felony himself (remember: his players and coaches have committed crimes and they get to stay too), he will coach from his deathbed if he so wishes.
I predict that his last laugh will be to pass the throne (not the porcelain throne, the coaching throne) to his son Jay. What a kick in the groin that would be to Tom Bradley.

I also thought 1994 would have been the perfect time to go out on top. He had Fran Ganter and Sandusky waiting in the wings. He had the perfect opportunity to go out on top. He has stayed around too long. I feel it's very hard for anyone to do a job that requires so much mental and physical attention past the age on 70 or so. I really believe that he is worried about giving up that job and watching someone else win a National Championship at Penn State while he is still alive.

Kirk, your last post speaks to Joe's obsession with power, self-centeredness, and egomania. I think that he believes that when he retires from football coaching, that not only should the university should cease to exist, but that the univese as we know it should come to an end.
Any of you college students need a paper topic? How about "Narcissisum...My Way", where you reference portions of Paterno's novels and compare them to traits of narcissisum? If you're at PSU though, the Secret Service/Paterno Guestappo may hunt you down.
Read Paterno's narcissistic books, they're classic cases. Indeed, Joe is pathological. It's sad, really.

The first sign he had lost control was the 99 Minnesota game.
The thing that irks me is that Joe and the administration are putting the assistants in an incredibly tough spot. More and more, kids are asking them what the plan is when Joe leaves, and they have no answer.
Not naming a successor is a bad sign for Bradley. And Spanier has already said they are not going to pay a new coach top dollar like other schools do. Hey, all it did was give Florida and Alabama and Texas national championships.

That's exactly the point though TAE. The PSU heads don't really care about winning a national title. As it has been mentioned numerous times before, they're happy with the easy OOC games most of the time and winning 10 games a year and making a BCS bowl every once in a while, just as long as they make that money. I'm hoping they make a catch like they did with Sanderson for the wrestling program, but I'm not hoping for it.

Re: Aaah, NOW I know why JokePa can't recruit anymore...
It is so bizarre, Bison. They made awesome hires w/ BOTH lacrosse openings this year, they are paying Sanderson a RETARDED amount of money for a wrestling coach (granted, most is donor based) so why cant they get donors to chip in for a football coach? I dont want Butch Davis or Spurrier or a former NFL coach. I want an assistant from outside the program who has a vision, or a lower-level head coach. The guys I want in contention are Turner Gill, Randy Edsall, and Al Golden. That's it. We will never pry Fitzgerlad from NW, or he'd be on the list too. All those guys care tremendously about their players and are proving themselves. There are rumors Edsall has interest in Penn State. Schiano has been rumored for years, but too many people think he's swarmy.
Man, Joe looked bad yesterday. I guess one good sign was his public acknowledgment that he hopes Spanier will consult with him over a successor. That's the first time he's said anything like that. I think this is the last season for Paterno, and I think he is finally realizing that too.

We all know who Joe will want named as his successor, and I HOPE AND PRAY IT HAPPENS.
