One of my Pitt buddie forwarded me a post made on the Pitt Board today. I have to say it's pretty hilarious
YINZERS
I am not talking about those who live elsewhere, or those who love Pitt football, but also like the cities others sports teams. I am talking about those live and die Pitt football fans, the ones jealous of the Steelers, Pens and even Pitt basketball. You know who yinz are, yinz are the true Yinzers. An'at.
You get on Steeler fans, for being neanderthal, of caring more about their teams than anything else. Isn't this what you do for Pitt? You hate Steeler fans because they rarely give Pitt football the time of the day. Meanwhile when they do, Pitt football usually then colossally disappoints, meanwhile the Steeler fans look forward to another playoff year and possible championship. You make fun of fans who root for the winningest franchise in its sport over the last 40 years? Meanwhile, Pitt football hasn't finished in the top 10 of its sport since what, 1981? And get this....for Steeler fans, winning is the name of the game. You don't have to be a "Steeler Man" to be coach like Pitt fans so want a "Pitt Man".
Then you get on the Pens and Pens fans. They are "bandwagonish". Who isn't bandwagonish? Pitt football fans? Again, they don't need "Pens Men" running the team, and in untypical Yinzer style, they prefer a brand of hockey that is uptempo and exciting, rather than "Steel town tough", defensive based hockey. They are the unYinzer of the Yinzer teams in that respect.
Then there are the Pirates. I hate to tell you Pitt football fans, Pitt football is much closer to the Pirates than the Yankees. Great tradition and past, little relevance over the last two decades or so. But you hate on the Pirates, and you wonder why do people go? Maybe they like baseball. But really, a Pitt football fan should never question why one would have an allegiance to another product. Of course, in a Yinzermyopic world they live in, Tony Dorsett still plays for Pitt.
Then there is the brethren to Pitt football, Pitt basketball. I know there are Pitt football fans who despise Pitt basketball because of its success and adulation from the city and region. Admittedly, there is no pro team playing basketball here, but the program has been hugely successful in the toughest and deepest conference in the land. Sure, there is that "yeah, but they never got to the Final 4", and that is true, but there is a large portion of people who don't follow Pitt hoops until March Madness. That would be like not following Pitt football until bowl season. And you know what, many years it would be akin to Pitt football not existing in most years.
Then there are yinz. The special people. The true Pitt football fan. Who not just loves Pitt football, but hates everything and everyone else who detracts interest and attention from the program. Of course, only when it is good attention. Some of you have defined a "yinzer". Let's see, a Yinzer is:
1) Parochial. Check. Must have a Pitt guy in charge. Also, must build a fence around the WPIAL and keep the local talent here. Double check.
2) Myopic. Check. After getting blown out by Miami, another epic failure on national TV, a Yinzer Pitt fan can revel that Texas lost at home too, and WVU lost at LSU, despite not having its best player healthy.
3) Stuck in the past. Check. Double Check. Yahtzee. Gotta play "power football". Gotta run to win. Gotta play a base 4-3. We play football the right way. It is a man's game. Again, check, check, check, checkmate. Even dem dumb Stiller fans realize it wasn't until they got a real QB and could throw the ball, they became champions again. But stay the course.
4) Stuck in the past Part II. NINE TIME NATIONAL CHAMPIONS! Wall of Fame, banners of retired numbers in end zones. Yeah, that has as much relevance today as the Pirates 5 time World Series winners, and statues of Clemente, Stargell, Maz and Wagner around their stadium.
5) That Yinzer trait of Schadenfreude......Hey, we lost but other lose too. WVU let their drunk CB play. And anytime a rival player even jaywalks, we love to plaster it all over the message boards. Do you think Penguin fans care what a Red Wing player does? Even your so called ultimate Yinzers the Steeler fans don't act like this. Pitt basketball fans don't take joy out of UConn's problems because we hate them, it is because we may gain a recruiting advantage. But Pitt football fans, sometimes I think hope bad for PSU or WVU over good for their own programs.
You guys are the real Yinzers.
