Clemente and Paterno

Post by El-Moldo »

Isn't it amazing that Roberto Clemente had exactly 3000 career hits. Not 2998, or 3007. But exactly 3000. And then after that season, he never made another plate appearance again. Joe Paterno is now finding out that he is in the same boat. With questions looming about him coaching next year, can JoePa reach the 400 win milestone this year???? At 397 wins, JoePa needs 3 more victories this year to reach 400. He's got 6 games to play, and possibly a bowl game. And, of course, anything can happen. PSU could finish the season with a 7 game winning streak. They could win only 2 more games and not be bowl eligible. What would happen if JoePa finished this season with 399 wins. Would PSU bring him back as head coach for next year JUST to reach the 400 milestone???? With a 5-7 record, would some bowl give PSU an invitation just to get him that final victory? Interesting. We'll just have to see how the rest of the season goes.

Clemente died in a plane wreck at 38 while trying to aid victims in Nicaragua. How's Paterno's situation even close to that? I'm not sure I understand the point of this one El...

Dense? Go back and read your post. That was about as bad of a comparison as I've ever seen.

Clemente was on the verge of achieving 3000 hits before his last season ended. Almost EVERYONE expected him to return for the next year. Many thought that if he didn't reach 3,000 that year, he would almost certainly be back to get it the next year. No one knew what Clemente's future would bring. The way it turned out, he could have failed to get that last hit and his career would have ended at 2,999. But by luck, or destiny, or an act of God, or whatever, he got that last hit and reached a milestone that MANY baseball players never dream of. Paterno is on the verge of a great milestone. HIS future in sports is less certain than Clemente's was at that time. JoePa faces the possibility of NOT coming back next year for a variety of reasons. This may be his last chance to achieve 400 wins. I'm not saying that this is Joepa's life's goal, but he is only 3 games away from it. IF he comes up short this year, will he ever get a chance to achieve it next year????? DOES THIS EXPLAIN IT BETTER????????????

Your question is in the form of a question. Does the answer have to be in the form of a question?

deliverance, who first replied to the topic, stated that Clemente died in a plane wreck. Before his response, I said that Paterno is in the same boat as Clemente. Clemente probably wished he was in anyone's boat.
