It's a jump stop -- stupid!

Post by foghorn »

I really wish local hoops fans would acquaint themselves with a really obscure technique called a jump stop. Granted, it's only used by all the quality basketball players in the KNOWN UNIVERSE to bring control to their game. Our referees now actually seem to recognize it as a legal move. When executed properly, IT IS NOT TRAVELING. Now if our fandom could act as if they didn't come straight out of some of the bleacher shots in "Hoosiers"....

Who's gracing the hardwood with this obscure technique? Is this a Brian Barefoot technique?

I remember practicing the infamous jump stop in Jr. High. Never had much use for it cuz when I got goin with the ball...I couldn't stop movin to actually use it, usually i'd get called for an offensive foul, dripple it off my foot, or fall down and throw the ball into the stands!

Okay. Excuse the sarcasm.

I'll make it clear: any coach in jh or var. who doesn't teach or stress the jump stop has his/her head up their ****. It's one of the best ways to keep from getting charging calls and for getting off controlled shots. Of course, it's also pretty difficult to master because it takes a lot of practice. That means a coach will have to work harder. The best place to perfect it is on the playground, but since many of the kids in our area are afraid to be alone with themselves and a basketball, that's out of the question. Oh, there's that sarcasm again. sorry.

I know I have used this technique a little since I have been out of uniform, just in say pick up games, but I do see several people trying out this techniques now, I remember Landon Barton used this a little before my time, probably how I picked up on it. I also have seen Brian Barefoot doing this and he is very affective.

Jeremy Bolyard made great use of the jump stop. Unfortunately the quality refs around here often called him for traveling. I can still remember Hedrick's beet red bald head throbbing with fury every time he got called for it.
