Good Luck Rangers....a little '04 story for you!
I would like to wish the Rangers good luck in their game this upcoming weekend. As a loyal Tyrone fan, we wish your team the best. For the Ranger players, I would like to tell you guys about a team Tyrone played in the 2004 state playoffs that was supposed to destroy us from the WPIAL. This team was very similar to South Fayette. They averaged over 40 pts a game, were undefeated, and my god how was this little D6 team even going to compete with the WPIAL giant. They had this unreal passing attack with a D1 QB, a D1 receiver, and several big time lineman. Again, who the hell did this D6 team think they were to even step on the field in WPIAL territory, and think they could even compete against anyone from that area, which is the beginning and end of high school football in this country according to them. Well we kicked the absolute piss out of this team. The only points they scored was because the head sets went down and tyrone had to go into a generic defense beause calls couldn't be made. These WPIAL teams rely on their so called "mystique", and they try to bully you with that. Just come out, jack them in the teeth, and show them you don't care what dang conference they are from. Play tough hard nosed D6 football and they will falter. They do not like to be hit, and you guys can really lay some lumber! Again best wishes, and kick their ****!

I was at that game and indeed, Tyrone pounded them.I think the final was something like 35-7. It was a private school, Seton LaSalle, and I believe that the SL QB that year was former Pitt starter Bill Stull. Stull spent most of the game either running for his life or on his back after his 2nd step back in the pocket. It was an impressive performance by Tyrone. The game reminded me of another PGH area team that was trampled by a D6AAA team Huntingdon back in the late 1990s. Perry out of the PGH city league was led by Pitt record breaking QB Rod Rutherford. Huntingdon destroyed Perry something like 44-14 at Mansion Park, and Rutherford was barely able to receive the snap before being plowed over by Huntingdon's line. Huntingdon had a great RB/LB (Brindle was his name I believe) who ran for around 250 yards on at least 35 carries. Brindle absolutely punished Perry, I recall one play where Brindle carried 5 Perry defenders like 15 yards on his back. Huntingdon lost the following week to Moon in a close game. Moon went on to blow out whoever they played in the PIAA AAA championship game.
I agree that SF seems soft to me and that FH could out muscle them, much like Tyrone did to SL that night at East Allegheny HS. The weather could also be a factor as SL passes first, runs second. SF's defense also leaves a lot to be desired. With that said, if FH's secondary doesn't come to play and if they don't play their absolute best, SF's QB may throw for about 5 miles. A low scoring game would favor the Rangers, while a high scoring affair will favor SF.
90% of the time, the WPIAL champ is not only marginally, but FAR superior to the D6 champ in any classification A to AAAA in all aspects of the game (speed, size, athleticism.) About once every decade or so, D6 puts a team out there who can compete with the WPIAL champ. Maybe this is one of those years in AA.
You're right about some WPIAL folks thinking football was invented here, but folks in Huntingdon, Bald Eagle Area, Bellefonte, etc. all feel the same way about football being invented in Tyrone, so it's all relative.

I don't believe in the WPIAL. Sure it's much better the D6. But usually Forest Hills adn Tyrone and maybe a surprise team can compete in AA over there. And McCort and Bellwood wouldn't do bad in the WPIAL either.

i've always felt the wpial is vastly over rated, because yes it is good but not as good as people make it out to beCrimson09Crazy wrote:I don't believe in the WPIAL. Sure it's much better the D6. In football, eh, I think they have something around 38 state champs, but you have to remember that before they changed the brackets I think all the WPIAL champs went directly to the state semis. 9 of the remaining 16 teams are from the east this year, and it's looking like 3/4 champs will from there as well. Same thing happened last year.
I met a guy from Springdale one time (this was back around when they won the WPIAL) and I said, "Oh, where are from?" and he said something like, "Springdale, WPIAL champs baby!" and I said, "Oh, yeah, but didn't you lose to Bishop Carroll?". He didn't talk to me after that LMFAO

WPIAL also has many more teams than in the D5/D6 area so people should expect that their best will be better than the best from this area most of the time. If the NFC had 20 teams and the AFC had 10, I would bet that the NFC would win the majority of the Super Bowls.

Probably the most sane statement you've posted on this site. I always thought about every five though.WPIAL~Titan wrote:90% of the time, the WPIAL champ is not only marginally, but FAR superior to the D6 champ in any classification A to AAAA in all aspects of the game (speed, size, athleticism.) 91 FH took quips to the limit, shoulda/coulda/didn't win that game, but was right there.
94-FH
97-Tyrone I believe made States and lost
99-Tyrone
04- Tyrone
So we are overdue...
I can see why WPIAL thinks so highly of themselves:
1) Look at the NFL players this area has produced
2) They do usually win this half the state.
Tough to argue with that.
And the last thing I must tell you...NEVER QUIT!

just the actual numbers vs D6
Wpial total % of PIAA football - 21% 123/589
D6 - 8%
WPIAL total % of football schools per class
A- 24% (34/141) AA - 23% (34/149) AAA 20% (30/148) AAAA 17%
District 6
A- 16% (23/141) AA - 11% (16/149) AAA 3% (4/148) AAAA 2% (3/151)
district 6 state championship appearances what 4-5?? District 7 - endless
