Why Wanny was let go.

Post by hilltoppanther »

After last season, Steve Pederson asked Dave to fire 1 or more of his assistant coaches, Bennett being one of them. Wanny refused and even talked Pederson in allowing him to keep his staff together.

Fast forward to Tuesday. Steve and Wanny met again. Steve once again asked Wanny to fire certain assistant coaches. Wanny refused and Steve gave him the ultimatum of firing the coaches or resign.

After watching the hastily thrown together press conference, it all makes sense. Pederson, who is usually ultra smooth in front of the microphone, was flustered. The reason? He had no intentions of firing Wanny on Tuesday and was completely shocked that Wanny did not comply with his wishes of firing assistant coaches.

This is what I thought all along. His intense loyalty to his hand picked assistants cost him AND his assistants their jobs. Wanny tried to get into a squirting match with a skunk and he lost. That's the way it is, unless you're Paturdo. I know one thing: Unlike another PA college, the head football coach does not run the university and can't tell the AD AND the president to get lost when they ask for his resignation. I will be curious to see how this search unfolds. If Pederson messes this up like he did at Nebraska, he will be in effect firing himself...
