socio economics are are based on 3 factors: income, education, occupation. I don't believe there are any kids attenting the "bishops" who make $18k, dropped out of high school, and work at McDonalds. Kids from low socioeconomic families are not all problems makers. a couple rise up and make the most out of what they have. Great. But the reality is when you have a percentage of your student population in this demographic versus a school that doesn't, there are will be more problems.

Your scholarship example doesn't not reflect any demographics. had you said that 2/3 of McCort's student poplulation qualify for free/reduced lunch program, then you have something.

Teacher Unions are not the problem with education. Richland school district is one of the top schools in the state based on PSSA scores. Aren't their teachers unionized? What is the appropriate "reason to remain in education" and what does the unions have to do with it? Its a career and a profession just like the thousands of others out there. If someone who does the job for the retirement or summers off, i say fine - as long as they are doing their job. If they are not doing their job, then its a problem. on that note, I'd love to see somebody name a teacher who is not doing there job and deserves to be fired. There are hundreds of teachers in D5/6. I want to know who has received unsatisfactory evaulations and hasn't been fired. I doubt people could find any and you will not name many. that is just right-wing hog wash...

You were spot on with the disintigration of the family comments

Time for people like Portage Alum to whine and complain about parents wanting their kids to get a better education! Shame on those parents! SHAME ON THEM ALL!

If 100 local freshmen-to-be QUALIFY for McCort's LIFT program and would like to attend BM, what will be the criteria for selecting 20 of them? Who picks them? Do they have to be POOR and smart? What if you are poor and average? What separates those selected from those who are not? AND, if local businesses "match" the $50,000 grant that BM will receive for the 1st year of the program, where will the $200,000 in matching donations come from each year after the 1st 4 year cycle is completed?

The primary reason for public school woes is the disintigration of the family.

But the teachers union is also an issue. How about the teacher who has the same lesson plan , unchanged, from 1983? Let's talk about the teacher who filed a grievance with the UNION because he was asked to stay over 20 minutes and work with a kid who badly needed a little extra help? These things have actually happened. It is this type of destructive, uncaring, go-thru-the-motions-get-a-paycheck-and-go-home mentality and attitude that is protected if not indirectly nurtured and perpetuated by the teachers union. Thank goodness there are so many decent, hard working teachers who do what is right, go the extra mile, care about their students and do not avail themselves of this union muscle or the system would have totally collapsed.

PSSA standards are set, in large part, by the teachers union aren't they? So what type of gauge is that? And I really love all the self invented "awards" the public schools bestow upon themselves -- especially recently since the cut in funding and the push for consolidation. Have uou seen the billboards?

I love it when guys find politics when they reach retirement age. Its like criminals finding religion when they go to prison.

I haven't seen the billboards. everbody is advertising right now. PA Cyber has a commerical that makes me chuckle. The one with the girl and horse. I think the message is "don't let school interfere with your free time".

PSSA standards are set by the state dept of ed. a bureaucracy. i would hope there are some educators involved in the process, but i confident they are not in a large part of the planning. But i don't know who developed them maybe someone else can add to that.

The entire purpose of testing standards is to measure performance against them. Since every public school is required to test student performance on the standards, and they all use the exact same test, whats a better way to measure schools.

There are flaws in the testing process. I'm told that a special ed students must be given test with modifications to "level the playing field" in their regular curriculum the entire year. But then Students with disabilities must take the exact same PSSA test as students with 4.0. That doesn't make much sense.

A teacher using the same materials for 28 years is absurd. Unless its a history teacher. Becuase the content inherently doesn't change much. But that is an adminstrative problem. That person should have been evaulated on their content. If they weren't teaching the standards that are required by the state, then they should have been canned.

The only adds I see on billboards or in the paper are for McCort. Guess they want to increase their attendance or they wouldn't be advertising. A doctor who is booked solid for weeks isn't out there advertising, right? Of course one way BM has discovered for increasing attendance is the LIFT scholarships ( which is the theme of this topic by the way ). Get 80 NEW students to attend BM over the next 4 years AT FULL TUITION!!!! Plus all the incidentals which go along with it. What private school wouldn't want that???

So how do you get one of these Lift Scholarships??? The main requirement is, you have to be eligible for free or reduced lunches based on a scale for family income. Then.....
1) each student has to fill out an application. On the application form you are asked, among other things, your religion, your parish, your ethnic backround. It's a wonder they didn't ask for a picture. They stopped doing this in colleges many years ago.
2) each student must write an essay about a person who has been a positive influence in your life.
3) each student must provide 3 letters of recommendation on the form provided.
....The admissions office will then review all materials, INCLUDING junior high academic and disciplinary records ( dumb trouble makers need not apply ). A "scholarship committee"made up of school and community leaders will review the qualified applications and make "recommendations" for acceptance into the program.
And the scholarship highlights:
1) academic enrichment services
2) adult mentoring
3) Extra-curricular activities ( I'll bet there are )
4) character and leadership development programs

Friday's tutorial is on obsessions......Obsessions are thoughts or ideas which have four (4) main characteristics. They are invasive or intrusive, recurrent, inappropriate and totally unwanted.

Obsessions are due to ‘conflict’ in the brain (brain chemistry) in that it misfires.....Because the brain misfires, obsessions just seem to remain or can in fact even become stronger. As mentioned, obsessions are recurrent and intrusive. They can be very inappropriate also, but also an important facet of obsessions is that they are 100% unwanted. They are of a different nature to addictions and other problems that people can have. Obsessions are ALWAYS unwelcomed and they bring no pleasure or relief what-so-ever(sorry Moldy).

Obsession? How come when this topic was started, it was met with indifference and apathy among the McCort faithful on this site? That's more troubling. Guess they thought it would go away.
