Loya out at North Star
Re: Loya out at North Star
common sense with his recime and records speak for himself. Players need scouting, gameplan, and then some good coaching to win all those championships. They just don't come on pure talent alone. That coach had to do his homework because a good coach will shut down pure talent every game. Look at shade vs southern fulton last year? Shade had way more talent, but hendershot had a good gameplan and beat a more talented team by wearing them down and making shade chase them playing a man way out front, until shades tongues were hanging out and then they would lul them to sleep and score an easy basket while wearing shade down. They were in better shape and shade should have went zone and saved there legs! Loya doesn't get voted coach of the year by his peers from talent alone! He has hoops camps for the kids and takes them to berlin to play in the summer! And as far as those big kids he developed from north star, In junior high they couldn't even dribble or shoot, but when they were seniors, they were fantastic ball players who went over 1000 points. But I guess the kids get all the credit for that and loya never was there to help or teach them! I can't understand why you people can't see what a good coach does for your school? Now you will see with this new coach what losing experience will do for north star this year and years to come! Don't say the cupboard was bare because if you remember the walker bros and stasiser should be back and were coached by loya and if they would all be back with the others it would have been another 2 championships. Also a coach has to be hard and demanding with the kids these days or you won't get anything out of them and you lose because they don't respect him or aren't scared of a benching or a good butt chewing!Loya proved he put his time in and north star got more than there share of championships and great records from loya! Talent and the kids only take you so far until you hit other schools with talent and good coaching and that is where the coaches distinguish themselves from the others and loya has showed that in the championships he won north star.

Yeah like Sppawfan said Loya took them all the way to Berlin during summer to play! That must have been expensive and a long process to get every kid a passport, cheap plane tickets, and acommodations. They probably played some pretty talented teams and it was a good chance for the ns boys to mature. How many other local programs do something like this?
Re: Loya out at North Star
Resume, read loyas and you will find out what a good one is to get you anywhere you want to coach with his accolades and records! You guys were saying he went nowhere with his teams and did nothing, i just mentioned two things that I knew he did take them to. He probably took them to other summer leagues also! You don't have to be sarcastic old school, and yes some good teams were at berlin. Maryland and west virginia teams were good there as was harmony and somerset. Fyock is good with taking his teams all over to play and puts alot of time in as does prosser also! Somerset county schools will never beat somerset again from here on out!

That somersets program is up and heading in the right direction. They have alot of good players coming up thru that won the windber leagues and are dedicated. You will see. Somerset lost to shade and north star in the boswell tourney a couple years ago. Now those teams won't touch somerset if they play them now or in the future with the program they now have. somerset was playing freshmen alot the last couple of years and now they are juniors and seniors and have alot of young talent coming up in the 7th and 8th grade also!

I'm not always on your side with some of the things you have to say, but i could not agree more, 100% correct on this statement

Re: Loya out at North Star
Very true, and why is somerset so good? Well scott close of course, he uses a lot of Lance Loya's stuff and of course it is great stuff because he got it from none other than his father the great jack loya. All of Lance's success at the Mount using this stuff really inspired Coach Close. Now somerset has cemented themselves as soerset county's elite basketball school.
Re: Loya out at North Star
Looks like AB and his relatives are up and at it again. I think a barnes is coming through somerset and now all somerset county schools have to worship this great up and coming player and program. Don't get me wrong, somerset is going to be tough but seldom do schools with the "recime" of subing 5 in and 5 out all game succeed as a team. There just never is a chemistry built within a program like that. Somerset needs to choose a starting core and let the next 5 fight for playing time with the starters instead of playing all 10-15 equally and destroying any competition there would be for a starting job.
Re: Loya out at North Star
I agree with the starting 5 and a deep bench of 9 wins games more than the 15 kids subbing in and out! You can never get in a groove and alot of times the best 5 kids aren't on the court together and you never get good chemistry from any group of boys doing this. Somerset has barron, close, and buck along with a few others that are really good. They have a good group of freshmen with van litten, mostoller, hart , dick, and beeman. They also have two great ball players from the 8th grade in barnes and heiple that would both start on any county team now as a point guard! Also coyle from the 7th grade is a nice ballplayer. Mark it down, you will see the talent coming up. Teams can't compete in the windber leagues except for mccort and j-town. Holsinger has a team also that is good from central cambria or bishop carrol? I don't know where these kids will go to school at.
