2012-2013 Enrollment
Re: 2012-2013 Enrollment
I can't understand why the schools around here avoided the mandated jointures (no more) and mergers of the late 1960's like Westmoreland and Allegheny counties had to submit to. There was much fighting against those mergers, but they were mandated to merge anyways.
Was John Murtha the reason school district mergers in these local counties were dismissed?

couldn't agree more. it's also pretty ludicrous that a full annexation of all small municipalities into greater johnstown has not really even been considered at the top level since the 60s/70s.psycho wrote:Fragmentation of public schools and municipalities which causes inefficiency and uncompetitiveness is overwhelmingly the major problem the Greater Johnstown area faces. With Mr.Murtha gone and with us to soon have NO LOCAL representation in Washington, we are just beginning to see the future.
Unite and survive or stay fragmented, wallow in the squallor of uncompetitiveness, continue to be jealous of each other and hate achievers and whither on the vine. We have reached an inflection point where a decision has to be made which way we go. Do we move on beyond the post industrial era or do we become West Virginia?

Back in the '60's, these were some of the school districts at that time: Adams-Summerhill, Triangle Area, Franklin, East Conemaugh, Cresson, Lilly-Washington, Forbes, Jenner-Boswell, Nanty Glo-Vintondale, Ferndale-Dale, United Joint, Carrolltown?, Patton?. Where are these schools today? Obviously somebody was merging back then.

Cambria County had its fair share of forced mergers, namely Blacklick Valley (Nanty-Glo-Vintondale who merged on their own a few years before and Blacklick Twp. (Twin Rocks), Conemaugh Valley (Franklin-Conemaugh Twp and Greater Conemaugh, formerly E. Conemaugh) Penn Cambria (Lily-Washington Twp, Cresson and Gallitizin) and Moldy's beloved Forest Hills (Adams Twp-Summer Hill and Triangle which was a short lived merger of South Fork, Beaverdale-Wilmore, another merger). In the years from 1954 -62 in addition to the mention above non-forced mergers you had Barnesboro-Spangler to from Northern Cambria, John Carroll-Hastings-Elder Twp. to form Cambria Heights, and Ferndale-Dale which changed it name later to Ferndale Area.
Somserset county has always made me wonder how it escaped more mergers. North Star (J.B.J.-Forbes) is the only merger of the 1963 school act. How there were not other mergers like Salisbury Meyersdale I don't know.
From the end of WWII to the school act of 1963 there were numerous voluntary mergers, since then the Monaca Center merger is the only voluntary merger I can name.

Re: 2012-2013 Enrollment
Sorry, I thought they were already one district (school board) which would have made it more of a consolidation not merger like Bedford/Hyndman or the Liggy/Laurel Valley consolidation, but that makes two voluntary mergers then
