While Joe was not a personal hero, a statue of anyone is no more than that- a statue. It's there to remind us of memories, mostly good, or for some, bad. It has every right to be there, un-defaced. Then again, show me a campus ANYWHERE that doesn't have jerks who should be paying attention to their classes and future rather than causing public problems outside the classroom. Another observation about most statues- the local bird population appreciates our supplying them with public restrooms. If the statue of JoePa has to be moved, I nominate the space immediately beside the "dude" reading the newspaper leaning against the Tribune-Democrap building. They both would then have a buddy, and Joe could say something like Pssst! hey bud! What're they saying about PSU now? Just a couple thoughts.

Therein lies the problem: The Paterno statue is just that: A STATUE.
Too many in the cult look at that statue as a MONUMENT, or worse a SHRINE, ALTAR, or TEMPLE, a place to worhsip at the feet of their (false) GOD.
If you don't believe that observation, just do an Internet search and you can find 100s pictures of cultists kneeling, genuflecting, praying, etc. at the Paterno statue as if it were a place of worship.
TheWE ARE... cult and the PSU football cultists are a large part of why this problem became as out of control as it did. Football is a religion there. Janitors fearing for their jobs for reporting child abuse? Are you kidding me? In the words of Freeh, if that was the feeling of janitors, God help those at the top. What an utterly disgusting culture in need of a serious reality check.
Like a petulant child, PSU's football program is in need of a time out and has been for a very long time.
The powers at be at PSU would be wise to self sanction the program in the most serious manner, and that means a great deemphasization of football. The extreme part of me says shut it down for a few years. I would have the utmost respect for PSU if they took matters into their own hands and deemphasized football and only then would I truly believe that they were committed to changing the out of control football culture/icon worship there. Otherwise, the rest is just lip service.

NO, I am thinking that the institution needs to self-impose sanctions for such a colossal failure and such gross negligence. Take responsibility for the catastrophe and culture of silence, false elitism, and outright CRIME that has been allowed to occur and consequently has been covered up over the last 2 decades (we may eventually find out that it has been much longer).
PSU has yet to say "We were wrong, and we are sorry." They need to truly place the academic instiutution and common values of honesty, integrity, and decency ahead of football for once.
Allow the Shane McGregors and Silas Redds of the world to transfer and be immediately eligible at any other NCAA program if they so wish. Wish them well and thank them for their service by honoring the first year of their scholarships...reimburse their new college for the first year of their scholarship. Those who do not wish to play football elsewhere should have Their scholarships honored by PSU.
Now, Will PSU self sanction to a high level like self imposing a death penalty to football, or even deemphasize football? Never in a million years. Will the NCAA administer high level sanctions? Never in a hundred years.
Donate money to a cause supporting the victims of child abuse or rape? You have got to be kidding me. I say way too little and far far too late.
Sure, just make a large monetary donation and begin the healing, like PSU tried to do with bowl game proceeds. It's the thinking of the almighty dollar and protecting the PSU brand that is part of the issue here. Gotta have those 7 or 8 home gates, right? PSU threw a lot of money at Sandusky at his retirement, unheard of at the time. He was given money plus the run of the campus, and of course we know how that turned out. Paterno's buy out after his dismissal was astronomical. Paterno was given a deal worth roughly $6M, plus all kinds of privileges. The university did, however, draw the line by refusing what was in the original agreement, like the use of the university's private jet by the surviving Paternos and the luxury box next to the presidents, wow they sure manned up on that one! PSU also gave Paterno an interest free $350,000 loan many years ago, for which no repayment was required. The Cult loves to talk about how Paterno donated something like $4M to the university. PSU will pay that out at least 20 or 30 fold before it's all over due in part to his negligence.
Here's a sobering thought: When all is said and done years from now with regard to lawsuits, settlements, legal fees, fines, crisis management, public relations, etc. Paterno's financial net worth to the university will be FAR below $0.
The PA AG office, PA state police, FBI, NCAA, Department of Educaion, insurance carriers, and civil attorneys are not done yet either. In addition, the negligence that Paterno, Spanier, Curley, and Shultz showed has made PSU virtually uninsureable with regard to liability policies. We are not even talking about the potential Clery Act violations and Title IX violations very much at this point either, but PSU is being investigated for non-compliance in those areas as well. Think about that for awhile. It's pretty staggering. Actually, it's unbelievably mind blowing. It's just beginning. Football should be the absolute last thing on anyone's mind at PSU right now.
But, money fixes eveything, right? Just make a few donations to the victims and set up a fund to assist them and all will be well. Again, it's that kind of thinking that is a big part of the PSU culture problem.
What happened at Penn State, what developed that culture into a cult, was the notion that they were special, that they were the paramount of righteousness and morality in college athletics...and in fact, all of higher education. "The Penn State Way", "The Grand Experiment", "Success With Honor" all gave a grander purpose to all who bought in, a permanent sense of superiority that permeated all things, and thus, tragically, it also excused all things. Any failing on or off the field could be brushed away as "well, we do it the right way" or "we wouldn't recruit a kid of that caliber" or "he's not Penn State material." Everyone here has heard a 1000 variations on that.
PSU also created an atmosphere where any negative syllable was squashed before it escaped University Park. Prior to the internet, media was controlled with threats of revoke credentials. Following that, things started leaking out...as evidenced by ESPN 2007 outside the lines documentary. But anything that did reach the press was dismissed as "an aberration" or "that's just Joe being Joe" or "Joe will make it right."
This is how cult-of-personalities flourish unchecked. Atrocities throughout history have been floated on promises of a greater good and sense of righteousness, often accompanied by censorship of any criticism. That is why this is beyond just sports, and this is why the coverup could not just have happened anywhere...and this is why the culture at Central Pennsylvania's most important institution needs to be destroyed and rebuilt. This is well beyond just punishment or revenge, this is about tearing down a hulking, rotten edifice, and building something new, the morally right way.
To get to the original thought about the NCAA death penalty for football...The people of Central Pennsylvania, judging from the quotes (from even their own BOTs like the nutcase Lubrano) in newspaper articles and on message boards, need to live without Penn State football a while. They need to know nothing on Earth is infalliable or immune from corruption. The Pennsylvania State UNIVERSITY has to put the school first, and it can't do that while millions of dollars are flowing 7-8 Saturdays in the fall from Beaver Stadium. As the Freeh report stated, the leadership of the school needs to be completely restructured and rebuilt, and that can't be done there unless the influence of the football program and its supporters is mitigated, at least long enough to put the proper chains of command in place.

I'm tired of hearing people use the excuse of the current players shouldn't be punished for something they didn't do. What a bunch of crap. USC has not been allowed to play in bowl games because of Reggie Bush and Pete Carroll. It had nothing to do with their current players. What about Ohio State? What about ANY team put on probation for past offenses? It NEVER has anything to do with current players. How would any program ever be held accoutable?
