Re: Playoff field
The way they run the basketball playoffs in regard to who gets what seeds for state playoffs is the most ridiculous of them all. Can't believe they still use it.
Re: Playoff field
I can be convinced either way on the playoff issue. The problem is some classes have way more teams than others. 16 out of 40 AA teams is not as bad as 16/30 AAAA teams. Not sure what the answer to that is, but thats what makes it look bad at certain times. They would also have to try to balance the conferences if they went back to 8.
The first round is not really the playoffs anyways. In name only.

Re: Playoff field
I totally think we need to go to 5 Class's. 5 Class's would help balance out the smaller class's a little better out West and the larger ones out East. Granted the WPIAL will dominate the #'s in 1A and 2A still, but it would do so much more for competitive balance across the state.

Re: Playoff field
Just really bizarre seedings. Was looking through the past few years this week. They had never seeded a team from the same conference higher than someone they finished behind and all of a sudden then do it twice as far as JM and BC and Neshanok and Union. Tough for Monesson to lose one game to the number one team and draw a five??? Token
Re: Playoff field
Naw... I see exactly what they did... They seeded Neshannock the #4 team but they're playing away.
Re: Playoff field
Right. They had to go to do it twice to make it work. They had to put a lot of stock in the Sprindale/Union and NC/Neshanok games. They really don't have a ton of data otherwise. I guess I would disagree with their assessment of the Big 7 as well.
Re: Playoff field
I don't think the Big 7 is that great either. Only 1 way to find out tho.IMABIMAB wrote:Right. They had to go to do it twice to make it work. News & Notes...
Don't be surprised if games are moved to neutral sites that have turf fields, and/or moved to Saturday. Stay tuned.

Re: Playoff field
The problem I have is it won't be settled on the field. Could make an argument Monesson is 2 in the state, instead got the 4/5 spot in the WPIAL. I know I don't believe that but based on games played there is a case. They have one loss to the number one team. Monesson should have been 2, Sto 3, Rochy 4 and Neshanok 5. Would have been settled on the field then. Instead Sto is getting a free ride and everyone will talk about how great they are when the game is semi competitive because Heinz is the worst field Clairton will see in the playoffs. WPIAL really embarrassed themselves here. The Clairton coaches agree perhaps. Seems like the WPIAL has been trying to screw them all season.
Clairton (9-0), which will play Frazier (7-2) in the first round Friday, struggled in its season opener against Chartiers-Houston before rolling through its schedule with ease, outscoring its opponents 431-62. Many members of the Clairton faction at the Green Tree Doubletree on Monday night were furious that Brentwood and Monessen — the second and third place teams in the Black Hills Conference — found themselves on the same side of the bracket as the Bears. Brentwood is the No. 8 seed and could face Clairton in the quarterfinals.
Monessen, meanwhile, is the
No. 4 seed and could be waiting for the Bears in the semifinals.
Many on Clairton’s coaching staff believe Monessen is the second best team in Class A.
“I couldn’t believe when I saw both of those teams on our side,” Nola said. “Those are both really, really good teams. I wasn’t expecting that. But, you know, you see things that surprise you every year.”
