Any Freshmen that helped their team in Week !
Re: Any Freshmen that helped their team in Week !
I think United played at least 5-6 freshmen on Saturday. One of them started at TE (Devin Mack), he had a catch and several tackles. Ligonier was starting a freshman at guard (Elijah Parrish) on Friday night.

With the numbers on smaller teams they have had to either start or play freshman over the last decade. I believe FH had on last year also BC had one or two start the last several years. There are always one or two kids on the freshman team that are big enough for varsity football and playing against their own age is actually not beneficial to them.

CV played at least five freshman against Ferndale. One scored an early touchdown on a catch. The other four played on the offensive or defensive line.

Wow... I am shocked at the amount of freshman getting varsity time. It speaks volumes, of the state of HS football in our area. Typically there is a freshman here or there that is actually good enough to play varsity and contribute. The amount playing show that numbers have to be down and the programs as well are down. There is no way that this many freshman actually are good enough to be playing varsity football under normal circumstances. (in a good program or one with numbers)
I am actually becoming concerned for football in the future. I think the NFL fiasco with head injuries and now trying to take all the big hits out of the game is scaring a lot of parents. Also, youth leagues are hurting HS as well. Kids are being asked more and more to specialize in sports, baseball, basketball, etc just lowering numbers and football more then any sport needs numbers.

There's another factor at play in some areas. An upcoming class at one local school has more than two girls for every boy. I'm not sure what to attribute that to but it is something to take into consideration!

I guess it would be a good class to be a boy in!?

KMR,
Totally disagree with you on this one.
Much more beneficial for these schools to be able to play a JV schedule. Benefit is that the 10th and 11th grade players who are not good enough to play varsity actually get a chance to play. More kids benefit from there being an actual JV team. JV is running the same offense as the varsity which in turn prepares the kids for playing varsity.

If the jr high isn't running the same offense.... You got problems

If you don't have enough players for a jv schedule, drop the program, co-op, or consolidate. Terrible losing 9th grade season. It will kill the area in bb too

Collin Smith, a freshman from Ligonier Valley, had 107 yards on 10 carries.
