Defense wins championships
Defense wins championships
Spread topic got some talking going, but what about the other side of the ball. 4-3,4-4, 5-2,3-3-5? What has anyone seen this year that they were impressed with, anything unusual or different?

I think the type of defense you run depends on the level of football. For smaller high schools/colleges I think the best defense is the 5-3/5-2 (due to most teams running the football 80-90% of the time). Larger high schools/colleges 4-3/4-4 (due to more overall speed and more of a passing game). The NFL I think the 3-4 is the best (due to the ability of blitzing linebackers and the zone-blitz scheme).

When I was in school we had a 4-3 a 4-4 a 5-2 and a.5-3. At the varsity level you should be able to master atleast 2 or 3 defensive sets. Its not rocket science.

Is anyone consistently running 3-3-5?
I remember when Tyrone and BC were hot, both teams played 4-3 with a two deep, tampa two look. Always found it interesting that both were successful and ran 4 man fronts consistently.

I remember those days. Tyrone still runs the 4 man front. I played for Bellwood-Antis and BA has always been known for a 50-base defense. I think the 5-man front or 50-base defense is what most high school teams run, atleast in the lower levels A/AA where the talent level isn't as great as the bigger AAA/AAAA schools.

Blairsville runs a base 3-5-3 that looks a lot like a 5-3

Somerset ran a 3-3-5 tonight to counter Upreps passing attack. First time I've seen it in a while.
