Playoff Scores
Re: Playoff Scores
I'll be the first to admit that my memory isn't always the greatest, but I can't remember a time in the 70's where the PIAA divided public and private.usatf oldguy wrote: You aren't getting my point. They need to divide public and private. Just like it was in the 70's. This isn't new. They used to have private and public classes. No reason not to go back to it.
There used to be a completely different state-wide organization called the PCIAA that was comprised of Catholic schools only and was based out of the Pittsburgh area. Many of its member schools dropped out of the PCIAA in the late 60's and very early 70's to join the PIAA. I think the PCIAA ceased to exist around 1974 and all of its remaining members joined the PIAA. From that point forward, I can't ever recall the PIAA segregating public and private, but I could be wrong.
Re: Playoff Scores
One thing to consider, if you do have seperate public and private school playoffs it still doesn't fix the ever growing problems of Charter schools (Ex. Lincoln Park) where the public schools are concerned. I could be mistaken, but I believe that charter schools are considered public schools and would still take part in a potential public school playoff field. While it may solve the issue locally when it comes to public vs. private schools in playoffs, it would do nothing to allievate the problem in a state playoff bracket. In addition, while there are no local charter schools that I'm aware of, how long until we get one? They seem to be popping up more frequently around the state. If a local charter school were to be formed, we'd be right back hashing over the same ground we are now regarding potential recruiting and the inequities of no geographical boundaries for some schools. The bottom line is there is no easy answer here and I doubt very much the current system will be changed any time soon.
Btw, I loved the candor of the Monesson coach regarding playing Lincoln Park and the irony of the Monesson taxpayers footing the bill for the 6'8" Monesson kid playing for LP. It is really hard to argue with one thing he said in that article. Good for him.

Re: Playoff Scores
Anyone ever heard of Phila. Roman Catholic? A powerhouse, back in the 60's & 70's. They played in their own league, and played the Public league champ every year. It DID happen back then. It's only been maybe the past 15 yrs. or so, they began playing w/ publics. As Archie Bunker sang, "Those were the days!"
It ain't over until it's over.
Re: Playoff Scores
Sorry Manfred, that's not correct. The Philadelphia Public League and the Philadelphia Catholic League did not join the PIAA until 2003 and 2008 respectively. While they did play each other after their respective playoffs, they were never part of the PIAA playoffs until they joined and the PIAA formed District 12. The PIAA has never segregated public and private schools for playoff competition and I maintain that will never change due to fear of litigation unless the state legislature forces it.Manfred wrote:Anyone ever heard of Phila.
