BG

Post by districtsixhoops »

Moschella said he's looking to have the players do a lot of strength and agility training in the off-season. Having another scorer emerge to complement Benzel and Adams would be a big lift for the team, and the successful junior high program should be providing some reinforcements capable of pushing the returnees.

"There's not one girl in this locker room that doesn't know that to be fair to this whole team we have to put the five best on the floor, whoever they are," Moschella said. "There's a good group coming up. I'm sure a few of them are going to push the ones that are here."

What he should have said is, "There is a good group (actually two and they only arrived this season) coming up. To be fair to this whole team we have to put the five best on the floor, whoever they are and wherever they came from. Bellwood, Central, it doesn't matter."

This was the year to get BG in D6 but no one stepped up to beat them.

Finally someone from BG said it. This is from SFB14 on the thread about BC.

"That is a great post hoops. To say that it's not an advantage for a private school to be able to draw players from more than one geographical school district is just ridiculous. I'm not as familiar with the BC kids as I am the BG kids because I've had 3 kids graduate from BG (even though I went to a small public school) and I currently have a nephew in their junior high boys basketball and football programs. It is a similar situation at BG in that all their players have been in their system since they were in elementary parochial school and have stayed together ever since. In addition, all of them live within 6-8 miles or so of the school. Is their situation the same as a small public school? Of course not (especially in their girls basketball program which I'll say right up front is pretty much a farce when it comes to being on equal footing with other small A public schools) but is certainly doesn't mean these kids were "recruited". When I sent my kids to BG they started in a parochial school in 1st grade and I never once thought at that time about athletics and one of them didn't play any sports at all. I just made a decision to sacrifice a great deal of money in exchange for an environment I wanted them to be in. I'm sure that is the case with most of the current parents at BG or BC who have kids playing. Do you really believe they were thinking 10-11 years ago they might be good enough in basketball to make a run in the district/state playoffs so they all sent them to school together?

The system is broken and despite every fix that someone on here comes up with nothing is going to change because the PIAA is unwilling to go down that path. They do seem to be looking at the Charter school situation because it involves taxpayer monies at those schools. Anyone who attacks or attempts to change the system is justified in doing so in my opinion. What isn't okay (again in my opinion) is to attack kids who are playing any sport because you don't like how the system is set up. That is just idiotic. Why diminish any player and the work they've done because of where they go to school?"

I'm not talking about the kids that have been in the system 10 or 11 years. I'm talking about the kids that join the team (girls team) from grades 8 and up.

I usually don't weigh in on the public/private debate, as it is just the same things said over and over year after year, but there was a picture in the Bedford Gazette of the BG girls hoops team and mentioned their four Bedford County players. It didn't bother me, but I'm sure seeing that picture made a few people cringe!

Blairsville girls move down to Single A next year. Both Blairsville and Bellwood were better than BG imho this year.

But with this "new group" of players and their better-than-expected run this year, maybe BG will win another d6 title next year. No matter what, though, it will be interesting to see what happens with probably 2 of the best 5 Single A teams in the state in the district (both with ability to win state title). Major difference in Girls bball between A and AA. Had Blairsville stayed AA, they wouldn't have even been serious state title contender.

Laloosh,

Yes, a team did step up and had them until the final buzzer. However, the combination of a Catholic H.S. playing in a Catholic College gymnasium - that's a tough combination to beat when the last shot comes down to a prayer.
