More coaches are for it than against it. I'm not sure where I stand. As much as I hate paying $600 a year for a schedule that includes UMass, Akron, and Temple, I'm not sure that this is the way to make it better.
Recruiting for non-power conference schools would be horrible. Funding would dry up from loss of TV revenue, financing provided to travel to a major conference team's venue, and overall interest from their fan base.
I also would HATE seeing a 4-8 Minnesota team go bowling over a 10-2 Cincinnati team.
At the same time it's not fair for a team to go undefeated and go to the 4-team playoff with a 8 game conference schedule, 4 non-conference cupcakes, and no conference championship game over a 1 or 2 loss team that played 6 ranked opponents before their loss in a conference championship.
IMO they need to split the middle. Require a 10 game conference schedule and a conference championship. Each team must play 1 power conference team in the no conference schedule. This would provide a lot of uniformity but yet still allow the Marshall vs WVU, Penn State vs, Temple, and Pitt vs Ohio type matchup. It will help non-power conferences stay afloat.
Sample Penn a State Schedule would then look like this:
Kent State, @Iowa, @Indiana, Maryland, @Ohio State, Illinois, @Pitt, @Rutgers, Michigan, @NW, Purdue, Michigan State
Including the championship game against say Wisconsin
If a team can get through that schedule with 1 loss, they deserve to be in the 4 team playoff.
