Just read up on how the AP Top 25 poll works. There are 64 sportswriters and broadcasters who vote each week. A vote for 1st place gives that team 25 points. A vote for 2nd place gives that team 24 points. A vote for 3rd place gives THAT team 23 points. And so on and so forth down the line. A vote for 25th place give THAT team 1 point. Soooo... the most a team could get is 64 x 25, or 1600 points if everyone gives them a 1st place vote. to get 3 points, you need 3 guys to vote for that team for 25th place. OR you need ONE guy to vote for that team for 23rd place. So if the sportswriter from the Harrisburg Patriot News (a little home cookin') decides to give PSU ONE vote for 23rd place, that's ALL it takes to get 3 votes, with NOBODY else in the ENTIRE nation giving PSU a single vote. It's gonna be a while before PSU makes ANY move into the top 25. Wisconsin looms 3 games away, on New Year's day, in Madison. Don't hold your breath.

Two different people voted for them. One 24th and the other 25th. Neither were from the Harrisburg Patriot.

So from ALL OVER THE NATION, you get one vote from Roanoke (they had to save face when VT lost to PSU), and 2 from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette. Heck, the Patriot News didn't even give them a vote, and THEY cover every Penn State game. Yikes!!!

I really don't care who's voting for them or who isn't. The fact we are having the conversation about Penn State hoops and the top 25 is a step in the right direction.

The fact that Moldo is concerned enough about Penn State getting 3 votes in the poll to take the time to go and research it means the Nits are doing something right.

Glad you finally now figured out how the top 25 polls work. I mean it definitely is rocket science...

Since you are just now figuring out how these polls work, here is some more information on how they work:

-They are conducted weekly
-They are released on Tuesday of each week

So if they win this weekend and next week they will probably have even a few more votes. The top 25 before Wisky is a stretch but not out of the question either.

I'm sure the Roanoke sportswriter threw PSU a bone to save face of a historically bad program, with a first year coach, that only has 10 players on the roster, and starts usually 3 or 4 freshman. Do you realize how many other programs a Roanoke sportswriter has to cover rather than VT?

If you wanted a more realistic reason to discredit why PSU got votes, a better option would be that these 3 individuals got lazy, were out doing year holiday shopping, and decided to look at the better records of the major conference teams. Penn State fits that bill.

El-Moldo wrote:konjo, are you living in dreamland???? PSU is nowhere near the top 25. You must have delusions of grandeur if you think their schedule is good enough to warrant national recognition..

You made an assumption they aren't getting any national recognition, we proven 2 writers, a coach, and an analyst all have them either as a top 25 team or a tournament team, so move on.

Now do I think PSU is a Top 25 team? No. But some experts see things otherwise.

I made NO assumption that PSU was not getting any National recognition. But of the 20,800 votes in the last AP poll, PSU got 3. And what surprises me is that Paul Zeise actually thinks that there are only 23 teams in NCAA Division I college basketball BETTER than Penn State. WOW!!
