Mountain League Week 1

Post by TAHS92Alum »

Well here we go.

Mt Union @ Huntingdon
Head Coach Matt Young will need a couple Loner players in this one. The Cats are returning much of their starting team from last year, including tailback Jon Wagner. Coach Hudy has a simple game plan, get it to Wagner. The Trojans defense looked like the great security breach that they were named after last week in their scrimmage against Central. Look for more of the same..Huntingdon

Philipsburg @West Branch
In the battle of the defeated, it's anyones guess. After a winless campaign in 14 coach Soyster has alot invested in this season and the future. Philipsburg has moved their 9th grade class to the Varsity roster for numbers. Exiled castaway(Philipsburg,Bellefonte,Lewistown,Tyrone) Coach Guthoff joins the staff as the Defensive Coordinator. Look for a defensive battle and lots of young mistakes. I go with the home team Warriors of West Branch

Jersey Shore @ Bellefonte
The Red Raiders should be a solid team this year. Alot of returning starters on both side of the ball. Shannon Manning seems to have the program headed in the right direction. However on Friday they should head to the Jersey Shore, although they are much improved they are not elite. They are playing at home however, maybe the visitors get tripped up in the parking lot on the jog to the lockerroom. Jersey Shore rolls

Bald Eagle @ Mo Valley
The other Eagles and Ron Hoover hit the road to Houtzdale with revenge in mind. They will be hindered with another rebuilding year and a real lack of team speed again. They have to stay in front of the chains to be able to compete. That is a problem against Sherkel and company. For his career he has over 5000 yards and the spread offense will be a real problem for the Eagles to defend. I predict a long Knight...Mo Valley

Penns Valley @ Juniata
Big Game for all of District 6. Yes its the Rams and yes Tobias is still the coach. No it's not at home so we can't take the concession stand quality into consideration. However it is a measuring stick game. This is the only team in the District that the Indians will face prior to entering their creampuff schedule and collect all of those playoff points. It should be interesting in the Valley this year as Mr Alexander returns to give the offense some spark. He missed the second half of last season with a broken arm and let young Tobias take over the QB reins. With Alexander and the speed in the backfield, I'll take the Rams

Fort Hill @ Clearfield
Last year the Bison left the state for Keyser in the opener. This year Fort Hill travels to Clearfield and the locals hope they don't wind up on the short end. Fort Hill is a traditional powerhouse in the state of Maryland and a good primer for the Bison playoff run and eventual meeting with Somerset. Lezzer and Cawley will provide plenty of offense this season, with Spaid calling the shots from behind center. I just don't see an upset here...Fort Hill

Tussey Mountain @ Central
With the trees gone, get ready for a fireworks show in the Cove. I think this might be the only in game fireworks display on Friday night and we aren't talking about the game. The Dragons come in flying high after a busy off season schedule. Many of the weapons return from a year ago and they will be just to much for Josh Smith's Titans. The defense is still a question mark, but they will score early and often. The Dragon scorch the Titans in this one.

Game of the Week
Tyrone @ Bellwood Antis
Since 1934 the Backyard Brawl has opened the season for both these teams. Perhaps one of the most bitter rivalries in the state, skill is outdown by will in this one. John Hayes starts the season with his eyes on win number 300 at Bellwood. Tyrone's Jason Wilson probably isn't as old as his game shoes. He notched his first career victory last season in a thrilling 18-14 victory with the defense coming up with a sack as time run out. This years edition comes down to a couple key points.

Is this the year Burch can finally solve the Tyrone Defense?

How will the younger players contribute on the big stage?

Can Bellwood stop the Tyrone run game behind a vaunted line?
