I would hate to see rivals change based on points/classification/conferences. History of the game has to mean something

Re: Bishop Carroll future
Although I see no support for this logical idea at this time it is the way WPIAL works now. Ihave to agree with Tyrone Alum and Dragon about the elimination of local/historical rivalries. That is one thing I don't like about the WPIAL. Being from Westmoreland county and you don't have Penn Trafford palying Franklin Regional and Hempfield not playing Greensburg-Salem that is why if d-6 would ever make football sections imo week 1 & 10 should left open so each school can schedule as they please. I know some would schedule rivals and other might not but at least the opion is there. But section play is 2 - 3 cycles (2 year period) away at the soonest
Re: Bishop Carroll future
The only reason Johnstown and Somerset are playing small schools is that they are essentially guaranteed a playoff spot. If they actually had to earn their place with a point system, they would be at a disadvantage playing down.

Sorry but you really don't make any sense here.Birda wrote:The only reason Johnstown and Somerset are playing small schools is that they are essentially guaranteed a playoff spot. If they actually had to earn their place with a point system, they would be at a disadvantage playing down.
First, the only reason Johnstown and Somerset play smaller schools is because there is a lack of bigger schools in the area. Second, they ALREADY earn their playoff birth with a point system. Not sure what you are trying to say.
If anything, it is not an advantage for Johnstown and Somerset to play in the LHAC. It is a disadvantage. A few years back Johnstown went 7-3 and missed the playoffs because they didn't get enough points playing smaller schools.
I always hear people lamenting Johnstown and Somerset being in the LHAC, but the fact is the other schools in the conference are very happy they are. These other A and AA schools have a chance every year to pick up bonus points for beating AAA schools. Also, it helps the smaller schools in the conference prepare for the playoffs having played bigger and deeper schools. Heritage and Westpac teams do not have that luxury.
Re: Bishop Carroll future
I really am confused by your post. Johnstown and Somerset are not "essentially guaranteed a playoff spot." 50% of the teams in the subregion make the playoffs. They ALREADY earn their place with a point system.Birda wrote:The only reason Johnstown and Somerset are playing small schools is that they are essentially guaranteed a playoff spot. Re: Bishop Carroll future
I might be wrong, but I thought points weren't used in the subregion. Even still 50% basically means a winning record will get you in. In the Johnstown example, obviously it was a fluke year. They are better off playing teams they will vie for a spot for because a win has twice the benefit.
Re: Bishop Carroll future
I think it is a down year for football in the area. With the exception of single A, no team is going to make any noise in the inter district playoffs.
Take the LHAC for example, Richland, Forest Hills, Bishop McCort (the last 2 yrs), Bishop Carroll, and Penn Cambria all had possibly their worst season in the past 20 years.
I saw PM play Saturday night and I think they can battle and possibly beat BG. BG is good, but the weak conference makes them look a lot better than they are. It should be a great showdown in the district final. PM looks like a faster Bedford team and matches up very well with BG.

Re: Bishop Carroll future
Somerset has been playing LHAC teams like Richland and Westmont for at least forty years. They are in the proper league. Johnstown has dropped enrollment, etc. and is now playing in the proper league as well.

Re: Bishop Carroll future
What about Indiana? I thought there was chatter of them leaving the WPIAL for D6 a few years ago?
