D6 A Boys Power Rankings - 12/12

Post by HSFootball88 »

Hers's my rankings for this week, feel free to add your thoughts.
1. Saltsburg LW:1 (7-0) - Kept rolling with solid wins over Central and Penns Manor, they should be tough to stop this year.

2. Homer Center LW:2 (6-0) - Another strong week with two 38 point victories over Purchase Line and United. They play LV on Tuesday.

3. Bishop Carroll LW:4 (5-1) - Picked up a big win over McCort last night; Looks like they will live and die with their defense this year

4. Bishop Guilfoyle LW:3 (0-0) - Congrats on the state championship! I'm excited to see their basketball team now.

5. Ferndale LW:5 (4-1) - Ray Hinton has led them to four straight lopsided wins; should be a good game with Rockwood on Monday.

6. Portage LW:6 (5-0) - Saw in the paper that they were up on Windber 50-18 at half on Thursday, will be interesting to see them and Shanksville on Monday.

7. Moshannon Valley LW:7 (3-1) - Got beat pretty bad by Bellwood but played two strong games to finish the week. It may be a close one at Harmony on Monday

8. Penns Manor LW:9 (3-2) - Only lost at Saltsburg by 11 so they definitely are a tough team this year; The final of the Christmas Tourney at Portage between these two should be a good one.

9. St. Joseph's LW:10 (3-2) - Moved them up with close losses to Penn Cambria and Penns Valley. Stephen Beattie seems to be their leader while averaging nearly 25 a game.

10. Conemaugh Valley LW:8 (2-1) - Fell down after their 35 point loss at The Hive this week, although they have two opportunities for wins against Turkeyfoot and Windber this week.

1) I don't agree with Saltsburg. All their wins were over teams with below .500 records. Penns Manor is the only team above .500 they played and it was a close game, resulting in a 11 point win.

2) Same could be said here. Interesting match up on Jan 14 between Saltsburg and Homer Center. Keep in mind that Purchase Line and United have lost over a combined 50 games in the past year.

3) I am with you here. Big wins against Ferndale and McCort. I would have them higher

4) Haven't played a game and even though they made the playoffs last year they were an early exit. Don't give them too much credit before they hit the court. Football takes it toll on the body. Fourth is a good placement for them

5/6) Agree with Ferndale above Portage. You look at common opponent and Ferndale has put up some impressive numbers. Again it will be a great match up when these two meet.

7) Big win over Bellwood. This team is right there with Ferndale and Portage. They will do great things this year!

8,9,10) All great picks! Penns Manor v. Portage will be a good match up. That could shake these up a bit.

My rankings:
1) BC
2) Saltsburg
3) Homer
4) Ferndale
5) Portage
6) MO Valley
7) Penns Manor
8) BG (Prove that success can translate)
9) St. Joes
10) Conemaugh Valley

What are you thoughts?

I also wasn't that impressed with Saltsburg, although 7-0 is all that matters at this point. Central just 3 days removed from playing Aliquippa on the football field and after just 2 practices had a halftime lead on Saltsburg before losing by 11. Central was an 0 for from 3 point range for the game.

I'm not a homer so I'm gonna call it like I see It. Portage has beat the teams they're supposed to beat to start the season. They haven't been really tested whatsoever. The Mustangs lack any size on their roster so if/when they run into some teams that have some big men they're gonna struggle. When the season comes to an end I look for Portage to be a little better than .500.

#1 Homer Center – Ranked top 10 in the state and hasn’t had issues with any team so far. Big wins vs Richland
#2 Bishop Carroll – Not sure if this team is actually the 2nd best team but they have some really good wins so far this year. Big wins vs Westmont, Ferndale, Bishop McCort
#3 Ferndale – Honorable mention in the top 10 of the state very convincing win against a solid team in Portage. Key win Portage
#4 Saltsburg – Honorable mention in the state, Seemed to be playing very well early in the year but a loss to Apollo Ridge and a struggle against Blairsville seems to have brought Saltsburg down to earth. Key Win Penns Manor, Central
#5 Bishop Guilfoyle – Still early in the season for them but being thumped by Bishop McCort and then struggling with Forest Hills leaves me with a lot of doubt with this team especially after Carroll beat the same Forest Hills team by 20. Key win Cambria Heights
#6 Portage – Honorable mention in the state but had a rough last week losing by double digits to Ferndale and then getting beat at the buzzer to Claysburg.

I have watched a variety of the teams listed above. Carroll is very young and lacks size. The potential is there but at this point in the season, they are not the top in District 6A. Sloppy play will be the downfall for this team. BG is extremely athletic and disciplined. Although they are lacking the "true basketball players" they make up for it in athleticism and physicality. I have not watched HC play this year but I have watched Saltsburg. Extremely physical and have one talented guard. I am not sure if they can withstand the flurry of fouls that may come their way in District playoffs. Ferndale is very limited with what they can do. Hinton is an extremely gifted athlete and will continue to carry this team. They do have another big that poses a threat to teams if they can find a sort of 1-2 punch between he and Hinton.

Although it is early, I think many of these top 10's are very respectable. I think BG should be within the top 3 if not two and BC should drop into the 4/5 spot. We will see what takes place in the long run!
