Unlike the halcyon days of the 60s, we apparently didn't realize that not drinking water when it was hot out was actually risking your health as we know today. We simply accepted that kids (and officials) dropped dead every year from heat stroke simply because something as simple as providing them an appropriate amount of water at regular intervals was something that actually needed to be mandated rather than just common sense.

Modern medical science has proven that hydration is the key, not only to performance in extreme heat, but also a healthy life.
Modern common sense dictates that if you are paid to do something you should expect critical evaluation of your performance.  Unlike coaches, where only those at or above the high school ranks are paid, officials are paid at every level of athletic competition.  Whether a guy does it for the love of the game or to make a buck is moot.  Officials do make a buck and shouldn't be so sensitive when they are criticized for doing a poor job.  Sad thing is that too many guys get into officiating for the dough but can't handle the criticism.  Rather than seize an opportunity to improve their craft, they read meaningless forums and argue with guys who have nothing better to do than antagonize them.

Say oww, You finally said something that I agree with. Everybody should be able to take positive criticism in an effort to improve their performance in any job that they do. However, that criticism should come from people who KNOW what they are talking NOT from somebody that has NEVER done that job but thinks they ARE still experts in that field. Ive asked this question before, how can you or anybody else tell anybody how to do something better when you can't do it yourself. That puzzles me!!

Fans pay admission...  Therefore they are entitled to criticize.  Referees are paid to perform a service... Therefore, they are subject to criticism.

Internet muscles... haha good one.  Kind of like Internet Brains LOL    :-B

And the more you criticize, the fewer of them there will be.

I disagree. I don't think you are entitled to poke fun at a guy for being overweight or for making a bad call on occasion just because you paid $3 to get in the gate. And people wonder why we don't have more good officials....These guys get paid squat....i really can't understand why they do it. We should be happy they do because without them we would have no game to go watch.
