Conferences are never going away.  You can't play 6 games and still determine  a conference champion fairly.  That is why your idea will never happen, and doesn't really make much sense.  Sometimes there is such a thing as a dumb idea.
I'm calling for a completely new system! Out with the old conferences and make completely new ones.  Now each new "conference"  will be made of of one single classification. With 7 teams per "conference" you could very well determine the champion because everyone would play everyone else. The elite football states all already do this.  This leaves you three or 4 weeks at the beginning of your schedule to play your old school rivalry games  or other opponents you want to face to prepare for your "Conference" play.  This way you would get the best teams in your classification into the playoffs.

Sounds very similar to the WPIAL system that is the best model for high school sports. I and others have advocated it for years. Perhaps at some point District 5 & 6 will move past old allegiances and do what's best for the student-athletes

You still aren't going to have four weeks of non conference or section games. I would not be opposed to the WPIAL model though. A lot of people would have to come together and agree. Its too easy and convenient to schedule for Heritage and West PAC now. I don't see it happening.

As long as the privates exist , no one will ever agree to playing by classifications in D6

Why do the privates and public school classifications work in the WPIAL and why would they not in District 5/6?

In reality, the best teams usually end up in the district finals. How they get there, or who they play may change slightly, but typically is not impacted.

I agree that too many teams qualify for the playoffs (especially in class "A"). Is this due to revenue? If so, it's surprising that class "AAA" only takes 6 instead of 8. Why would the district want to give teams like Central and Tyrone (I know they're not the #2 seed this year, but many years they are) a bye? Both schools have many fans that travel or go and support the team at home. From a money making standpoint, taking 8 teams would make more sense in "AAA"

I think the bye is good to rest up but i think it could throw your team off also.

I wouldn't say the WPIAL has a better format. Their playoffs are a mess this year with best teams not even qualifying.

I would say the best teams in the wpial did qualify for the playoffs. It sucks that one team is gonna get left out of the beaver valley, but you gotta win who you play
