I remember as a kid watching WTAJ recap shows and thinking "what the heck is a Hubber!?" I also remember the Downingtown Whippets as well from those times, as well as Wilkes-Barre GAR Memorial Grenadiers from NBC affiliate we used to get from that region. When I lived in the York area, I'd drive past Northern York, home of the Polar Bears, in Dillsburg.

A few more non-traditional ones not mentioned:
Bangor Slaters (AC Slater anybody :) )
Jenkintown Drakes (MMM makes me hungry for Drakes Devil Dogs!)
Back when Bishop Carroll had their state playoff/championship runs I was close friends with a few of the Huskies and would go see them play because we(Portage) were finished for the season. Well they played Smethport in the State Semifinals at Mansion Park and they had a mascot there. It was a person with a Tugboat costume on starting around its waist like a life preserver then the stack going up to the top of his their head. Best thing is it would walk around and puff/blow smoke out the top of the stack/costume. Everytime Smethport got a first down their whole crowd would stand up in unison and yell "thats another Hubber FIRST DOWN !!!" and then signal the first down arm movement.

Most people have named a lot of the peculiar names from in state. Some others I can think of offhand are the Ambridge Bridgers and the Northern York Polar Bears.

I remember the East Conemaugh basketball jerseys. On the chest was a steam locomotive with black smoke belching out of the smokestack. They were great.

I've seen that on varsity jackets but not jerseys. Really wish I did. CV Jr. High was still wearing jerseys that had Iron Horses on the front in 1980 (my 9th grade year).

To offshoot to baseball as mentioned with Yard Goats, you have the Akron RubberDucks, Binghamton Rumble Ponies, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, Montgomery Biscuits, Richmond Flying Squirrels, Savannah Bananas, and Greenville Swamp Rabbits.

Plus, one of the greatest hockey team nicknames; the Macon Whoopee.

For HS, in PA, you have some the Hampton Talbots, North East Grapepickers, Ambridge Bridgers, Smethport Hubbers, Karns City Gremlins, etc.

In OH, you have the Glenville Tarblooders, East Tech Scarabs, John Marshall Lawyers, East Liverpool Potters, Philo Electrics, Norwalk Truckers, Crooksville Ceramics, Fremont Ross Little Giants, Shenandoah Zeps, Mansfield Tygers (spelled with a Y), Shelby Whippets, Brush Arcs, Garfield G-Men, and Barberton Magics.

Elsewhere, you have the Brush (CO) Beetdiggers, and Yuma (AZ) Criminals.

The best name, that even ESPN highlighted in a serious of commercials, was changed years ago. But, for the longest time, the people of Devils Lake, North Dakota cheered for the Devils Lake Satans. They're now the Firebirds.
