Mid Season NCAA Rankings PIAA Style

I ranked all the power 5 teams plus Notre Dame and BYU PIAA style. Wins over P5 teams are worth 100 points, wins over non P5 FBS teams are worth 80 points, and wins over FCS teams are worth 60 points. Then the winning team gets an additional 10 points for every win the other team gets. I originally wanted to do all FBS teams but it would have been to time consuming. I'll probably add the non P5 teams in contention for a NY6 game in future rankings for comparisons sake. The tie breakers I used were head to head, average points per win, winning percentage against common opponents, and all time winning percentage vs Pitt.

Some teams benefit from not having their bye weeks yet, but that should balance out in the next few weeks.

PAC 12- Four top 25 teams. Average team ranking is 28.8
SEC- Seven top 25 teams. Average team ranking is 31.9
ACC- Five top 25 teams. Average team ranking is 33.7
B1G- Five top 25 teams. Average team ranking is 34.7
BIG 12- Three top 25 teams. Average team ranking is 37.9
Notre Dame is the other top 25 team.

The SEC is very top heavy. The BIG 12 has played less games than every other conference with all of them already having bye weeks and it shows through out the conference. The PAC 12 is very balanced. The big ten and ACC are pretty much the same conference. They are similar in depth and quality at the top.

Good job. Must have taken some time to complete. A great "Just for Fun" idea. The fact is though, some teams have played 6 games so far and haven't played anyone in the top 25. In reality, that skews things a bit.

This is great.  Good job.  I really think the selection committee should factor in some of the things that you did here like number of wins from opponents, penalize wins outside of the P5 conferences, and penalize wins outside of FBS even further.  I know you can't "predict" what a team will look like in 8 years when these teams schedule but for the most part you know about what you will get.  If you schedule 'Bama odds are you are going to have a tough game, if you schedule NC State you are probably going to play a .500ish team, if you schedule Kansas you are probably playing one of the worst teams in the country.

Great concept, but I think rather than assigning points based on power 5 only, you should also consider the ranking of the team. Since this is your ranking, you could simply assign bonus points based on how good the opponent was, not just their conference and wins.

Yes, but he didn't include it in his point system. I think SOS is more important than if they're in a power 5 conference. For example, In his system ND is worth only 80 points but Maryland is worth 100 just because they're in the Big 10?

I actually counted Notre Dame and BYU as P5 teams because the schedules they play and that they are generally looked at as P5 teams. That’s why I have them in the rankings. I should have specified that more. And I do take SOS into account by adding the additional 10 points per wins the team has. So right now a team would get 150 points for beating ND and only 120 for beating Rutgers and that margin between the two will probably get bigger as the season goes on. So basically if you beat ND you’ll probably end up getting around 200 points for the win while only getting around 130 for beating Rutgers.

BUT getting the WIN is MORE important than getting the additional points. For example, BOTH Wisconsin and PSU have played NO ONE presently in the top 25. They are BOTH 6-0. Meanwhile, Ohio State got NO 100 points by losing to Oklahoma, AND got no additional points from everyone else Oklahoma went on to beat. So you can see, getting that win is MORE important. Without it, NO additional points. So play weaker teams and reap the benefits.
