District 5 Sports
I am not a die hard bleacher coach but after being at the Tussey Mountain - James Buchanan girls game tonight, I have to make a post.
The only sports I have ever been around are the ones my daughters play in - District 5 for the most part -
After living in this area for 12 years I have learned that a lot of other area schools do not like Tussey Mountain but I also know there are alot of other rivalries within District 5, also.
Tonight, I made my way over the mountain to James Buchanan to watch the Lady Titans. We lost. Its only a game. But I did experience something that I have NEVER experienced within this district.
It was Senior night for the Buchanan girls and the Seniors were singing the National Anthem - all the while - their fellow students (All guys I must mention) were laughing and talking. I could probably go into a big discussion as to why this really ticked me off, but I know that this is a Sports Forum.
If this is what it is like to go to a "good" school - NO Thanks!! I will stick with Tussey and know that there is respect for each other not to mention our country.
And to all the other schools within District 5 I must say Im glad to be a part of it.

I have been to may Tussey basketball games as a spectator and Tussey fans are the best. They are very loyal and supportive of their team. I love the atmosphere there. GRIPES me to no end hearing seeing kids disrespect the national anthem. They have no clue what it is even about. What was the score of Tussey and JB?? I am surprised they got beat.

It sounds like discipline must be a problem at JB. It's sad to hear that such things do occur such as disrespecting the anthem, but unfortunately it does happen. It may kind of simple, but if you would get these kids to sit down and watch a war movie about the US, it may help to inspire and get an understanding for what it's like to be an American. Let me explain...take for example the movie "We were soldiers" starring Mel Gibson. It's about Vietnam and the battle in the la drange valley (sp?), or the death valley. But if you watch the movie the whole way through, you see the little tattered flag that one of the soldiers put on a fence post in the end and you see Arlington National Cemetery as the narrator speaks. Now it may just be me, but seeing something like that inspires pride and admoration for the persons in the service and develops appreciation for our country and our flag. Or watch the "Patriot," also with Mel Gibson. It's so moving to see the things like this that you can't help yourself but to be caught thinking about how awesome it is to live in America. I may not make any sense with what I'm trying to say, but something as simple as a movie could perhaps instill some respect into those who are lacking. Does this make any sense to anyone ??

I know what you're saying Roadie. That scene with the little flag was very emotional. And you're right - the kids need to know, really understand, what it is all about. The movie idea could be a start but, you know, respect really needs to be taught at home. Unfortunately, most of the kids who need to see a movie like We Were Soldiers or Saving Private Ryan have parents who wouldn't bother to show it to them or discuss it with them. That's why they disrespect the flag and other people, etc in the first place.
I also have heard that JB has trouble with discipline. that's a shame - they have a nice facility and some good teachers. You know how it is - there always has to be one fly in the ointment

I completely agree that if some of these kids (and not just kids at JB) would see a movie it would change there way of thinking or lack there of But what gets me more than a movie -- I wish these kids could live my sisters life -- Home with 3 small children while her husband is waiting across the United States to be sent to Iraq for 18 months - Missing birthdays, holidays, and all the special milestones! I guess some people will just never understand unless they live it! The next time we are at a sporting event and they are playing the national anthem just take time to think of the parent at home trying to keep things "normal" while the other parent is off protecting all of us!!! -

I totally agree it all starts at home. But are the kids that are undisciplined and disrespectful reflecting how their parents were when they were younger ?? Maybe in some cases it has to come from someone or somewhere else. A grandparent, another teacher, or just another adult that they respect. I know for me personally when I was younger I would rather hear some things come from someone else other than my parents, and maybe that's something that these kids need too.
But, we have to remember that they are simply kids, and of course their not gonna have a true understanding of the flag, the anthem, and what patriotism is all about. But for the older ones, there is no excuse. It can start with a movie, but then an explanation afterwards would help the cause, like stated earlier.
