Remember when John Franco was winning district titles, those were the days

Tough schedule to start for Tyrone. 5-4 before the crossover looks like a good bet.Elderlyeagle wrote: September 27th, 2024, 10:15 pm BG 50
Tyrone 37.
Good game in second half, Tyrone got to 36-29. 55-60 yd Pick 6 gave BG a late cushion they needed

I don't like to criticize the refs much but the 1st half was bad. Kid was bobbling ball out of bounds on int. Clear fumble and recovery for Tyrone I think they said he was down. Then the push off for the td. But they didn't give up and kept fighting.Elderlyeagle wrote: September 27th, 2024, 10:15 pm BG 50

I remember the days when Ligonier Valley won their ONLY two district titles. Same guy coaching for how many years and had one run of amazing athletes and found lightning in a bottle.EnzoLigoniere wrote: September 27th, 2024, 10:33 pm Remember when John Franco was winning district titles, those were the days
Oh by the way, LV would have NONE if Central and FH hadn’t been moved up to AAA those years.
I think there is a saying somewhere about casting stones and living in glass houses.

Mad respect for Coach Franco, but that is based on what he has done in the past.
Times have changed kids are different today.
Franco couldn't win at Penn Cambria, neither did Fetzer, but Felus comes in and they are a solid program. Is there talent in Tyrone? Sounds like it with fans saying they should be 4 -1
Ligonier could have stayed in the Heritage and been 10 - 0 yearly but decided to play better competition. Maybe they should come back and beat some weaker teams. Let's not forget the two titles came against the private school that recruits per this board.

Agree, Coach Franco is definitely one of the best if not the best to ever do it in D6. The guy hasn’t forgot how to coach, but as stated the game has changed and so has the types of players Tyrone has.EnzoLigoniere wrote: September 28th, 2024, 9:11 am Mad respect for Coach Franco, but that is based on what he has done in the past.

Also agree
We’ll never know obviously but one thing is for sure, it is a grind in the WPIAL and LHAC. The number of quality coaches in the conference is far greater than what it was 30 years ago. Guys like Coach Felus, Coach Brandon Bailey, and Coach Wheeler to an extent took programs and flipped the script of who we labeled as powerhouses in the LHAC. Throw in what Central has done in the last decade, Coach Steele at Bedford, Shoemaker at Ridge - there are very few gimme games. I’m sure it is the same thing in the WPIAL. One key injury, and all of a sudden you are 6-4 instead of 9-1.
In no way I am suggesting a team should run from competition, just merely suggesting that it is tough to win in a strong conference, and when you aren’t winning it is tough to keep the energy in your program that you need to get kids out and compete.
These Coaches deserve a lot of credit for playing competitive football in today’s society. It isn’t as easy as many think who have coached a Pee Wee program to a 6-2 record running tailback toss and jet sweep every other play (and no blitzing allowed!)

Glad to see this talk instead of everyone bickering. Lol Look at in my opinion the 3 best coaches in d6 history in Bailey, Hayes and Franco. When Bailey and Hayes retired the programs where still good but not as strong as they were before. Same way with Tyrone and Franco still good but not as it was. As a coach of there ages probably gets hard to keep connecting with the kids as they once did. Franco is the last of the mohicans. To be as consistent as the 3 were for all the years they were shows the greatness of those 3.

Re: 9-27 Scores, brief commentary
Central Cambria baseball hired an unheard of Coach who related to the kids and they won a district title, but in football they hired an old coach with a horrible record and now have suffered because what didn't work at Shade still does not work. I am in favor of letting younger coaches have an opportunity. Felus is a great example of a team builder.
But let's be serious, the Francos and Shoemakers can't win they way they coached in the past, the mindset is different . They know the x and o part better than anyone. But change is inevitable.
The double wing may have been a competitive offense one day, but probably time for change at Westmont.
I will give Tony Penna credit , his return has made Johnstown better. He can relate to the kids.

I agree with a lot of that Coffin- but give Coach Franco a Mark Wyland, Jesse Jones, and Matt Share on the hame team again (hope I didn’t butcher those names) and we’ll see if he can still get it done.
You got to have the horses as well to be great
