2nd Round Site selection guessing game

Post by Head Roadie »

For next Tuesday I'll make the following projections:

AAA Boys- C.Cambria and Bradford @ Clarion, Perry and Johnstown @ Greensburg (S'moreland and Norwin possible), Lewistown and W.Allegheny @ IUP (St. Francis and UPJ possible)

A Boys- B.Carroll and Johnsonburg @ Punxy HS or IUP

AAAA Girls- S.College and Mercy. Prep @ Clarion...maybe futher as in Grove City?, Altoona and Char Valley a natural for IUP but could go to UPJ
AA Girls- BG and SSide @ IUP, UPJ or could get bumped further West with the Johnstown boys (Greensburg or Norwin)

The PIAA guidelines state that games beyond the 1st round should be at a "reasonable midpoint" depending on availability of site, or some vague statement like that.

AAA boys

Jtown vs. Perry--Norwin, Franklin Regional, Greensburg Salem (GS is not a real top-notch facility anymore with the renovations of Norwin, FR, and Gateway), SFU? IUP? There's no real good midpoint for this game. IUP would probably be the best site.

CC vs. Bradford--ClarionU makes the most sense, but may end up at DuBois HS (76 miles for Bradford vs. 71 miles for CC) if the PIAA wants to save $$$ on the site.

Lewistown vs. West Allegheny--SFU is the most neutral site...UPJ would be OK too, but IUP would be a lot farther for Ltown...Possibly a doublehedaer at SFU with Jtown's boys?

A boys

BC/Jburg...IUP makes sense, PIAA could hammer the Huskies and put the game at DuBois HS (35 miles for Jburg vs. 71 miels for BC) with the CC/Bradford game...ClarionU a possibility too

AAAA girls

Mercyhurst/State College...Butler Area HS is probably the natural midpoint (102 mi for Mercyhurst/76 miles for SC--but probably the same time-wise because Erie to Butler is mostly interstate while State to Butler is some hard driving), but this one may end up at Slippery Rock U if Butler isn't available

Altoona/Char Valley...IUP or UPJ, possibly even Johnstown HS if the PIAA wants to save a few $$$ n site rental.

A girls

BG/SSB...Remember, SSB is like 3 miles from the Ohio line, so a site like Norwin, Gateway, or Franklin Regional would be natrually neutral. IUP/UPJ would be a lot further for SSB.

I spoke with my WPIAL/PIAA contact and I understand it is very costly to rent IUP, UPJ, SFU, SRU, ClarionU, even though it is free PR for each college due to the large number of high school students that attend the games.

Fun to speculate, though, isn't it?

i wouldnt say the piaa always looks for the closest midpoint. case in point...this seasons A state playoff game for boys soccer featured bishop mccort and kane...the game was played at johnstowns trojan stadium, distances for the two schools: mccort = 2 blocks (less than 1 mile), kane = 128 miles

Gunner...that was a first round soccer game. All first round games are hosted by the district with the higher seed. From the second round on the sites are to be more "truly" neutral and equidistant.

WPIAL TITAN...guaranteed UPJ is hosting Tuesday...I'm betting it will be Lewistown boys and Altoona girls. With SSBeaver being so close to Ohio I'm betting that BG ends up traveling with J-town boys to one of the east 'burgh suburban schools that you've mentioned. I thought of DuBois HS as well and would not be shocked to see that for the BC-J'burg game...I'm guessing that a doubleheader involving CC and BC is a distinct possibility.
