2005 PIAA Bracket Proposal
Proposed for 2004-05 and 2005-06 seasons. Numbers refer to district and place; for example, 3-6 is District 3's sixth-place team. District 12 is the Philadelphia Public League.
*NOTE District 6 gets 1 entry in both AAAA and AAA. 6-AAAA goes into the eastern bracket. In "AA" D6 gets 4 berths and D5 gets only one. Not fair based on quality teams or historically doing well but with losing 1 team (Con. Twp. down to "A") it is fair based on raw numbers. 5-1 will play 6-4 in a 1st round game and it will be an eastern bracket game. In "A" both D5 and 6 get 3 berths. 6-2 will play in the east.
CLASS AAAA BOYS AND GIRLS
Top half, first round: 1-1 vs. 3-6; 12-2 vs. 1-6; 1-3 vs. 12-3; 11-1 vs. 2-2; 2-1 or 4-1* vs. 1-5; 3-2 vs. 12-4; 12-1 vs. 3-4; 1-2 vs 11-3.
Bottom half, first round: 3-1 vs. 1-8; 1-4 vs. 11-2; 3-3 vs. 1-7; 6-1 vs. 3-5; 7-1 vs. 7-6; 8-1 vs. 7-4; 7-2 vs. 7-5; 9-1 or 10-1* vs. 7-3.

Seems unfair on the surface, but the # of PIAA bids is proportional to the # of teams in a given district classification.
Look at District 10 in AAAA. D-10 has only 4 AAAA teams, yet all 4 10-AAAA teams are solid, a lot more solid than 6-AAA. George Junior, McDowell, Prep, and Central from tehe Erie area are all solid AAAA teasm, yet 3 will be left out of PIAAs.
Sprots 999, I am lonving teh way you talk trash like 6-AAA deserves more because they were a "blind squirrel finding a nut" in this year's PIAA AAA playoffs...THIS YEAR WAS A FLUKE FOR 6-AAA...
Let's look at THE COLD, HARD FACTS and the NUMBERS...6-AAAs PIAA performance over the previous 6 seasons, since 97-98:
6-AAA vs. WPIAL AAA: 1 (ONE!!!) win (Marion Center over Waynesburg a few years back) and 18 losses!!! That's right, 1-18, means they win 5.6% of their games against the WPIAL.
6-AAA vs. ALL teams in PIAAs: 2 wins (and that's because my alma mater upset the #2 ranked AAA team in PA at the time, Bradford)-21 Losses (6-AAA wins 9.5% of the time).
1-18 vs the WPIAL and 2-21 vs everyone from 97-98 through 02-03. That's the REALITY.
6-AAA deserves 1 PIAA bid under the new format--No more, No Less...Heck, 6-AAA should have had one PIAA bid or even NONE under the old format, if you went by the district's "performance" in PIAAs!!!!!

did i read that correct? district 6 is in both the east AND the west? how does that work??? would that mean that it would be possible to have 2 district 6 teams playing eachother for the state championship?

W~T is correct...they use a proportional system...They do not go by how your district has done over the years, which, if that was the case 5-AA boys would have the biggest complaint. The proportional system is that you get 1 bid for every 5 teams in that classification. They then work backward (I call it the "countback") and pick up those districts who are closest to meeting the standards to add the additional bids to fill up the 32 spots.
Examining all this closer, first District 6....4 Quad-A teams = 1 bid. If they ever lose a team they will lose their standing as a District. You must have 4 teams or you are subregioned with a neighboring district.
In AAA their were originally 8 and PC elected to move up so 9 teams = 1 bid. 6 got nudged out of the countback. A couple circumstances worked against them. First, their are a number of districts who don't meet the criteria (5 teams) but do meet the '4 teams to have a district championship' rule. Districts 9, 12, and 8 have exactly 4 teams. District 11 has 14 and gets the 1 additional bid leftover ahead of D6 for some reason...not sure if it comes down to an East/West proportional tiebreaker or the fact that D6 only really has 8 teams and 1 "elected" to move up. Several Districts (2, 10, 11) have exactly 15 teams and get the third bid. To me this is unfair. Using a ratio instead of proportions (and I'm no math expert so excuse me if I'm botching the mathematical language) District 6's 9 teams to District 10's 15 teams is closer to a 2:1 than the 3:1 that the PIAA awards based on their "1 for every 5" rule. But that's just me.
Moving on. 6-AA has 19 teams and they get 3 automatic and 1 in the "countback" for additional bids. 5-AA has 7 teams and gets 1 bid. Again, if you use a ratio 7:19 is closer to 3:1 than the 4:1 that is awarded and I would rather see 6 get 3 bids and 5 get 2, but that's just my idea of how to work the numbers.
