Pat Tillman
From the sources I have heard, he was a great NFL corner who led the Cardinals his second or thrid year on the team with 212 tackles. In fact, that set a franchise record in 1998. In 1999, he turned down a 9 million dollar contract from the St. Louis Rams to remain on the Cardinals roster for about 5 or 6 million dollars less. And in 2002 I believe, he turned down 3.5 million from the Cardinals to join the United States Army. He signed up for the Rangers, and didn't think he was sacrificing any more than the average person. But how many 'average' people would have signed up on a whim like that, even w/o giving up multi million dollar contracts? He was recently killed in Afghanistan, so not only did he give up millions of dollars, he gave up his life. He is a rare man in the professional sports world today. He wasn't worried about money, and he remained loyal to his team, even with a better offer from a better franchise. Very rare in today's sports world. And then he voluntarily left behind pro sports, the only pro athlete to do so since 9-11, to serve his country in the armed forces. Perhaps he should be inducted in the NFL Hall of Fame based on character alone, but perhaps he deserves something a bit more than to be placed with some of the people in there. I wonder if perhaps a Hall of Fame of sorts could be set up for people with great character, sportsmanship, and moral values, who are setting good examples for today's youth all across America. What do you think?
