Coach--great history lesson...interesting you should start with 1969, the year Trick Dick Nixon screwed them and the time when I began wondering which side of his mouth JoPa was gonna talk out of as a 9 year old. Here's the story...undefeted season, Ohio St. gets knocked off and sets up a possible showdown between #1 and #2 Texas or Arkansas and Penn St. in the Cotton Bowl. JoPa turns down Cotton Bowl bid to go to Miami to "have fun" in the Orange Bowl yet Blue & White fanatics go nuts because Dick Nixon is on TV giving a symbolic Nat'l Champ. trophy to Texas after they beat Arkansas in the reg. season finale...Go Figure??? I have never figured that out and even at 9 years old it didn't make sense to me.
Anyway, PSU has a great storied tradition but they made lots of hay (to quote my friend Farmer Hall) in the 50's and 60's where they rang up 15 consecutive winning seasons up to a .500 season in '66 playing "nobody". Few national rankings to show for it ('62 was their only top 10 appearance in the polls) and no major bowls to show for it. There is a reason for that....I mean come on, doesn't that seem a little fishy???
They went 77-27 in the 60's and not until '68 did they see a Major Bowl Bid. In '69 they played nobody either, and for those who doen't remember, Kansas State at one time was the team that had gone the longest in the nation without being in a Bowl game period through the late 80's. The 70's were phenomenal for the Nit's, no question one of the greatest decades in college football by ANY PROGRAM. 96-22 during that time. 7 major Bowl bids in those 10 years (should have been 8 but for a major Paterno blunder in '77--another favorite story!!). They did also upgrade their schedule somewhat during the 70's.
My point is YES they have a great storied tradition, better than WVU and better than Pitt (even though Pitt has more Nat'l titles) but take away the 50's and 60's when they were a glorified MAC team until the very end of that 20 yr. period and they drop from 4th or 5th on coaches list to 20 or so. In other words from the 80's on they did not do near as well as 50's thru 80. Their best time frame in that era was undoubtedly, record-wise, the first half of your comparison not the more recent 25+ years.
It would be fair to say they are headed the wrong direction and other than a few years the PSU program has not been as strong the last 20 years overall. Will they make the comeback, only time will tell. Very interesting (and passionate to some) topic.

The only reason WVU is in the top 50 is because Bowden spent some time there before going to Tallahassee.How about winning percentages since Bowden took over at FSU?Yes,they are#1,FOLLOWED BY Okla.,Neb.,OSU,Mich., and good old PSU .Paterno is a great person and one of the best coaches of all-time,but second to the man.
