(ALTOONA, PA) -- Huntingdon and Central advanced to Saturday's championship game in the Dean Patterson Curve Classic with semifinal wins on Thursday at Blair County Ballpark.
The Bearcats claimed a 7-2 win over previously undefeated State College (5-1) in the first game. Huntingdon (8-2) will face the Dragons, who held off Bishop Guilfoyle for a 6-5 triumph in the nightcap.
Based on a better overall record, Central (9-1) will be considered the home team in Saturday's game which will begin at noon at BCB. The Scarlet Dragons will be appearing in the DPCC Championship Game for the second straight year. Altoona beat Central, 9-3 in the 2003 tournament.
The Dragons seemed in command by carrying a 4-0 lead into the sixth inning against the Marauders. However, BG fought back to within a run twice in the final two innings before Central prevailed. The game ended when Josh DeStefano was caught trying to steal home.
The Marauders got an RBI single from Shawn Sipes and a two-run double by Andy Garofoli in the sixth inning to cut the Central lead to 4-3. After the Dragons extended the lead to three on RBI hits by Colby Hazenstab and Scott Stern, Bishop Guilfoyle plated a pair in the top of the seventh.
Johnny Cotto tripled home a run and scored on a double by DeStefano. Stern relieved starting pitcher Lee Kensinger and struck out Sipes for the second out.
With Matt Zeak at the plate, DeStefano made a bold dash toward home to try to tie the game. Stern sped up his wind-up and fired to catcher Evan Snowberger who tagged DeStefano in time for the final out of the contest.
Kensinger went 6 1/3 innings on a yield of five runs and nine hits to pick up the win. The right-hander struck out ten and did not walk a batter.
In the first game, Huntingdon built a 4-0 lead over the first three innings against the Little Lions. A sacrifice fly by Casey McGraw, a wild pitch, and a two-run single by Matt Young accounted for the early runs.
State College got on the board on a towering home run by Steffan Wilson in the fifth inning. The Bearcats responded with three runs in the sixth to salt the game away.
Jerrod Smith and Jeremy Stanowski each knocked in a run in the rally that gave Huntingdon a 7-1 advantage.
State College managed a run in the top of the seventh, but right-hander Dustin Border finished what he started to get the complete game victory. Border scattered nine hits, walked four, and struck out one. The Huntingdon hurler got 12 of the 21 outs on ground balls.
