Crybaby Award

Post by foghorn »

Hey everybody -- I saw this story on PTI today. Whaddaya think?

Coaching ban, public apology ordered for coach
By JOHN CURRAN, Associated Press Writer
May 5, 2004

PLEASANTVILLE, N.J. (AP) -- A basketball coach who gave a 13-year-old player a ``Crybaby Award'' will be banned from coaching, sent to sensitivity training and ordered to make a public apology.

Schools superintendent Edwin Coyle revealed the punishments Wednesday. Whether the coach loses his job remains to be seen.

James Guillen, 24, a third-year special education teacher at the Pleasantville Middle School, had a trophy made up showing an infant atop a pedestal, with a plaque bearing the inscription of player Terrence Philo Jr. and the words ``Crybaby Award.''

i dunno, i dont like the trend of baby-fying sports nowadays by limiting what a coach can say to kids becaue of their "self esteem," but that award is kinda harsh.

In this age of "political correctness" that is a definite faux pas.

Im not sure it ever is a real benefit to show any reference to a negative behaviour.

You become what you think about.

Perhaps an award that shows respect to the desired behaviour would be more effective.

Hard to judge this coaches decision without having more information.

might have been humorous to have made a comment in joking. But to go as far as to take the time to have a trophy created for this is just plain Pathetic.

I am not about babying kids but making a trophy like that is pretty poor judgement. I can't believe old school coaches soccer and jr. high football because he is a one man show that prefers individual sports.

Once when I was in 7th grade, we broke a state record for consecutive wins in AYSO level 4.
