Media Darlings and Villains

Post by foghorn »

What professional athletes do you Bleacher Coaches think are treated the best and the worst by the media, whether they deserve this treatment or not?

Barry bonds is treated like crap..of course, i hear he isnt to nice of a guy either. Some althetes were made out to be awesome, like wayne gretzsky(sp), but what about lemiuex. the man had cancer for petes sake., but how he handled himself, addresses problems with refs in public not on the side face to face, away from everyone like wayne did.

Pete Rose is treated pretty crappily, but hey. He brought that one on himself.

Joe Paterno is treated very well around here by the media. Kobe Bryant is getting a lot of bad publicity due to that trial. Eli Manning is probably almost next to God up in New York now. Just like Ben Roethlisberger is getting a warm reception in Pittsburgh.

Ron Cook of the PG had a pretty scathing indictment of Paterno in his column this past Friday.

Ah, I'd say Paterno gets his fair share of both. I'd have to agree with fleaflicker though. I watch incredibly too much ESPN and FSNP and not too often do I hear them giving Paterno crap. I think the guy is certainly subject to more trash talk than what today's media is giving him. He is a real classy guy, so bad mouthing him is about like cursing the name of Jesus. But the media today tends to have some balls, so I would expect them to be getting on him about his traditional ways of doing things such as putting second and third string in at the end of games that you are killing people (unlike a guy like Bowden at FSU who would run up the score to give him a better shot in the polls--I'm talking pre-BCS in both instances). I really haven't heard Paterno getting too much guff about the recent losing ways at PSU on the major stations either.

Bob Ryan on the "Sports Reporters" nailed Paterno yesterday. With this new contract I have the feeling that Joe'll now be fair game in the national media -- unless he has a good season. Then he'll regain his sainthood.
