Southern Huntingdon is CHEAP!!!!
Re: Southern Huntingdon is CHEAP!!!!
I would hope that the reason for doing this would be because of a point differential in case of a tie. However, if that's the case, they should look at doing defensive points given up as the tiebreaker to prevent running the score up.
If the tiebreaker isn't a factor, there is no excuse for doing this - no excuse at all.

Re: Southern Huntingdon is CHEAP!!!!
I'm going to start off saying that I play for SHC football. We have a reason for running the score up on Everett and scoring on the last play of the game. The Everett coach was interviewed earlier this week and during the interview the reporter said "Are you disappointed with your season" and the coach snapped back "Not at all, I'll still look good if we finish 6-4. We'll beat Southern, we start the easy part of our schedule this week."
Coach Garlock (SHC football coach) got wind of this interview and it made him as mad as it made us when he told us. He used that as motivation all week to practice harder. He wrote that on a dry-erase board before the game to remind us. We really, really don't like to be disrespected and scoring that last touchdown was our way of showing that. So there was a reason for that and I wanted everyone to know that before you judged us.

Well, I guess we all have the story now. So that still makes it right? No, it doesn't. If the Everett coach did say all that, he was wrong to do so. But the players are the ones that get disrespected when you run the score up, not the coaches. SH stooped as low as the Everett coach. With what the coach said, think about how classy it would've been to not run the score up. Now, instead of the coach eating his words, he's going to be fighting mad and he'll do it to you if given the chance. The day will come when the tables are turned.
I'm by no means an Everett fan, or a SH fan.

I am not a SH or Eve fan either....
But if you are up 32-14, you run a play to the 3 or whatever and go no huddle to punch it in....that is when it is cheap. They ran to the line to get the play off when it WAS NOT NEEDED. Ask any coach around here if that is cheap and they will agree. CHEAP is a perfect word to use because in a sense it is a cheap shot. Running the score up on somebody and scoring with :00 left on the clock out of no huddle is some of the worst sportsmanship I've ever heard of. I also believe Waltman's quote was probably taken a little out of context...they had just gotten through a pretty brutal stretch on their schedule with Ridge, CK, and NB.
As with all opinions I can't make anyone agree...but that is terrible sportsmanship...two wrongs don't make a right. If someone did that to NB or Tussey or Glendale or Shaler or Central or whomever...I'd say the same exact thing. SH did this same type of thing in Jr. High three years ago to Everett when I coached there. Airing it out when they were up and spiking the ball/no huddle stuff trying to score when they were up pretty good at the end. If you don't think this is poor sportsmanship (lining up on the ball out of no huddle with under 10 seconds left and pounding it in at :00 then I'd like to see your definition of sportsmanship and what it means to you).

Dawg - where's your sense of sportmanship? Hopefully you don't agree with them doing it, you just understand it.
Looking at Coach's post and how they do this in Jr. High too, it seems to me that this may be more widespread and part of SH program. If so, those coaches should be ashamed of themselves.
I've seen this happen in college - and it is different there. Those guys have to rely on big wins for a good ranking, and it's justifiable.
What's the difference in high school if you win by 18 or 24? Other than to rub it in, there is no difference. If they scored their last TD with 2 or 3 minutes to go, different story. With 10 seconds left and up 18, you kneel it. Most colleges looking for a good ranking would do that too.

I don't know how often it happens in JH or anything, I just know that Howard Hinish was very very very upset that night at Southern when it happened. I was there coaching at Everett....

Re: Southern Huntingdon is CHEAP!!!!
The "college" comment has no meaning.....No, it isn't any different, a college team wouldn't run up the score in that situation, no matter who they were playing...Sportsmanship, as you say comes to part in that same situation, but I don't see why it's wrong to run up the score when you already have the game won.....It wouldn't be called running up the score if the other team had actually been in the game and the score wouldn't have been so lop sided...maybe Southern Huntingdon ran the score up in against Everett, and maybe they did in Junior High too....It has happened now and there's nothing that can be done about it...
But if you have the ball at the 3, with 8 seconds to go, and your leading, in no way shape or form is it necessary to go no huddle and get the ball in the endzone. Hopefully you play on a team one day and that happens to your team NBbaseballWG5. Come back and tell us how you feel after that, I'm sure you will be saying, it's ok, they had the game won anyway. Come on, Southerns coach could have used that for motivation all week, but when it comes down to it, is it really necessary to go up 24 by mean of no huddle to beat the clock? Like Lion-pride said, it will only be a matter of time until either an Everett team or some other team does this to Southern, and I'll be willing to bet that they will be spitting nails when it happens.
