Youth Football Debate

It came up in another topic about CR and Bellwood. Curious to hear what most think.

My thoughts:

I disagree completely with the whole youth football league. I cannot speak of other schools, but could not name one Bison football player that is better or would have been better because they played in the youth tackle league.
You cannot properly teach an 8 year old to block and tackle. If you do, how many 8 years olds are going to stick their nose in someone's chest who is running full speed to either block or tackle. Bad habits and fear (which makes them say at 8 they don't like football---kids don't know what they like). Let them run around and grab a flag or just play in the back yard. Better yet, let the commi's help them in AYSO and develop their footwork. When they get tired of singing Kum By Yah and everyone playing they'll come to their senses and play an American sport when it counts. (That's high school for you CR fans----just kidding relax.)
8th Grade is when the real teaching begins and even then many kids are too timid to do it properly. I believe the negatives greatly outweigh any positives that could come from the youth league.

Stay away from AYSO...LOL....your child may just fall in love with the game and never step on a football field.

I disagree Bedrock it does help them going into 7th grade. The 7th grade coach doesn't have to spend the first 2 weeks of practice showing the kids how to get their equipment on correctly. They can actually work on drills and plays.

I agree with Bosshog. Kids can learn the fundamentals of the game before they hit 7th grade. I think Little League tackle teaches quite a bit and disagree that it makes kids timid. I certainly wouldn't want a 7th grade football team made up of kids who only know flag and hopscotch. And Bedrock...AYSO is a far cry from football.

I am really getting tired of soccer getting a bad rap. Step back from AYSO, if y ou ever watched a college soccer game you will see just how physical and technical it could be. Ayso does give soccer a bad rep, but know matter what sport you do, if you enjoy it, you will put 110% into it be it football ,soccer, whatever. Fathers in particular seem to chuckle at soccer, but there are Division 1 scholarship schools where your kid may get a soccer scholarhip before a football one. I recommend every parent at least watch a pro or college soccer game. The friendships among a soccer team are also different from any other sport. Parent of football and soccer kids, who played a Division 1 sport.(soccer)

Raeroman---It (AYSO) has been a joke with me for years and I am not being literal. I apologize for the misunderstanding, but will continue to throw my joking jab.

So if the theory holds true then Boss, Everett should be superior since their league has been around so long, followed by CR, and now NB.

I've heard more horror stories then success stories. I think Coach has heard one from NB land.

Bedrock CR and Everett started at the same time I believe and look at what I said. It gives the 7th grade coach an extra 2 weeks of practice because the kids all ready know how to put their pads on.

Bedrock, i'm curious to know what kind of horror stories you've heard. And raeroman needs to chill a bit. Nobody is picking on AYSO. I have boys that have played both. I have also seen them get their bell rang pretty hard in both games.

other then 7th grade teaching you the rules and basics to football, it never really helped me much. i got to play right guard.............for any of you who don't know me, i was starting safety my senior year :roll:
