Girls Tournament out East is bringing in the best
Girls' tourneys bring in the best !!!!!!
Once again, some of the best Girls' Basketball teams in the state will open the season in the Eastern part of the state.
This is the fourth straight year that has happened.
There are two defending P.I.A.A. champions playing less than "10" miles apart?
There are at least four heavy-hitter tournaments that deserve a little extra attention.
The Cumberland Valley and Catholic tournaments are the two best.
At CV, defending P.I.A.A. Class (AAAA) champion Mercyhurst Prep begins its title defense against Parkland. Mercyhurst dropped to Class (AAA) this year and is the No.# 1 ranked team in The Patriot-News' preseason rankings. Parkland is a team to watch in Class (AAAA).
The Eagles battle Class (AAAA) No.# 4 Altoona in the other opener. There's potential for a finals matchup that features two top-five teams.
Over at Bishop McDevitt, the Catholic Tip-Off features three teams ranked in the top "10" of their respective classes.
Delone Catholic, the two-time defending P.I.A.A. Class (AA) champion led by superstar Meredith Cox, takes on perennial Class (A) power Lebanon Catholic.
Then McDevitt, ranked No. #3 in Class (AAA), takes on Trinity, the No. # 9 Class (AA) team.
The championship and consolation games for the Catholic Tournament have been moved to Sunday because of the Crusaders' PIAA football game tomorrow afternoon.
Finally, District #1 powers Council Rock North and Downingtown East will again be part of the Central Dauphin Tip-Off tournament.
Each of those teams is ranked in the top "10" of Class (AAAA) with Downingtown East coming in at No. #3 behind top-rated Harrisburg and Oakland Catholic.
State College, a team to watch, is also part of the C.D. tournament.
Speaking of Harrisburg, the defending District#3-(AAAA) champ and PIAA runner-up hosts York in an interesting first-round game at its own Cougars Tip-Off.
One other tournament, the Red Lion Tip-Off, has the potential for a big-time meeting should Lower Dauphin and Red Lion win their openers.
Red Lion is the No.# 6 team in Class (AAAA) and the Falcons are a team to watch.
Things aren't nearly as shiny on the Boys' side, as no tournaments truly jump out as can't-misses. Those tourneys pop up over the Christmas holidays.
There are a few quality events, though, starting with the Carlisle Classic.
Three of the four entries -- Mechanicsburg, Chambersburg and Carlisle -- are favorites to make the postseason and feature plenty of players to watch: Mechanicsburg's Josh Koontz and Jeremy Boone, Carlisle's Jordan Stasyszyn, and Chambersburg's Jonathan Motichka.
Four Mid-Penns bang heads in the Paul Corby Tip-Off at Boiling Springs: the hosts Bubblers, Big Spring, Susquehanna Twp. and James Buchanan.
Cedar Cliff hosts a solid West Shore Tip-Off, bringing in sister-school Red Land and typically strong District #3 squads like Hempfield and Daniel Boone.
& Yes! Maybe not the most prestiges of tournaments, when it comes to heavy weights, but it's The oldest & longest running tournament in the state. They tip off at Windber, Pa.
