Towel crying & some retaliation...

Towel crying & some retaliation...

Did anybody read this on the Tyrone website?

In yet another "classic" vs a Dist.-#10 school, Tyrone came up "the width - of- paper" short of making the schools' 3rd trip to the PIAA title game. I'm going to try real hard not to sound sour here, because Grove City played a great game and deserves an awful lot of credit. But I will never understand how the DISTRICT #7 crew of officials could pull a chain, have a ball obviously a chain link short, then after one of the ....gentlemen signaled first down in our direction, their coach who was out at the sticks had something to say then the head ref slides a card of paper down between the ball and 1st down marker and signaled first down GC.First of all, the card wasn't even touching the darn post, it was touching the pad on the post. That was the game and a huge travesty as far as I'm concerned. Especially in a game that was played so hard by both teams and will go down as one of the best Western Finals in recent memory to be remembered as a game decided not by a great play or player, but by the men in stripes.I even heard several GC kids saying "how about that first down?" as they chuckled leaving the stadium. The result was a Grove City td 2 plays later with just over 1 minute to play and a 21-17 win for the Eagles from our north.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

& an answer from the refs side of the field (of course)!!!!!!!

This guy complains that the game was decided by the men in stripes but if the refs would have said that it wasn't a first down and turned the ball over to Tyrone, would they not STILL have been deciding the game? It would have just been in the other team's favor.

I tell you, this guy must have had some super human eyesight! To be able to tell it was short from the stands when it took the refs being a foot away to tell..... sign this guy up for sharp shooter or something.

P.S. You gotts to love those Western Finals:

I don't know - as someone not connected to either school, it looks like Tyrone got screwed over. I trully didn't care who won.

I think the problem here is the original signal of it being Tyrone's ball, the GC coach talking to the official, a remeasurement (who has EVER seen a remeasurement before), using a piece of paper on the 2nd measurement (again, who has EVER seen this before) and a change of the original call.

I don't think any of that is disputed by anyone. It sounds very, very odd.

That was the 1st time in my life that I ever saw that happen!!! I have watched high school, college and pro football for 44 years and have never seen what I saw done. TOTALLY UNBELIEVEABLE
I was at the game and standing parallel to the 20 yard line. I was on a grassy hill and you could look down and see what was going on very easily. Here is what I saw.
Wise ran to his left and was smacked and tackled on the 20 yard line. He was down as sure as I have seen 1000s' of running backs down on thier knees. As he was on his knees and on the 20 and he reached out with the ball as far as he could, lunged forward and laid the ball down 3 yards further. I was waitng for the refs to remark the ball back to the 20 where he was down. That never happened. The ball was advanced ilegally and the refs knew it and did not place it where it should of been. The ref who spotted the ball ran up and held the ball to the ground.
They called for a measurement and signaled 1st down Tyrone. 10 seconds later with the coach from Grove City on the field they called for a remeasurement. UNHEARD OF !!!!
Next thing you know they signal the other way for a Grove City 1 st down.
There never should of been a measurement. He was cleary down on the 20 yard line. Wise even stated that he didn't think he was close to a 1 st down. He knew he was down.
The ref or refs clearly blew it, Intentionally or Unintentionally they made a travestry of a great game.
They should never be left to ref another game.
These kids, both Grove City and Tyrone kids played hard. To have the game won on a blatant call ruined it all.

So the distance from his knees to his outstretched arm is 9 feet? How tall was this running back? Exaggerating your post hardly makes your opinion sound unbiased no matter how close you were to the play. Also, accusing the officials of intentionally making the wrong call is ludicrous. Officials work hard and will make incorrect calls, but they are certainly not intentional.

Your intitled to your opinion, and it is a good one.
Question:
If a runners knees are down where is the ball marked?
Where his knees touch? or where he lunges forward and lays the ball?
Also If a ref can't make the right call on a simple runiing play then why should he be on the field?
About refs: I guess there was never a ref who blew a call on purpose.
You can't be serious

Sports addict the answer to your question is this. The ball will be placed at the spot where the ball is when the knee or any other body part touches except the hand or foot. For instance if the ball is held close to the body when the knee touches (or any other part) the ball probably is around the runner's chest area and will be spotted accordingly. If the runner is extending the ball as he is touched down the ball will be spotted where the foremost point of the ball is when he is down. This process is much more difficult than it appears from the stands. The official has to monitor in this order the following series of events. Count the players on the field, make sure the offensive formation is legal, the snap, control of the ball, the blocks at the point of attack, the hand off or pass, control of the ball, more blocks in advance of and around the point of attack, the tackle and if the runner's knee is close to the ground (did it actually touch or not), control of the ball, spot of forward progress, actions of the players after the whistle was blown to make sure that their isn't any dead ball or flagrant fouls and this is all on a simple running play. If a more complicated play occurs (double pass, reverse, unusual formation, muddle huddle) add 50% more what an official has to monitor and see all this in a span of 5 to 10 seconds. This is a sport that needs good quality people to become officials, we are desperatly short. Any one interested email me and I'll show you how to apply.

How the ball was spotted is a moot point compared the "remeasurement". I've see alot of HS from officials in all sports. But this has to be the worst thing I ever heard of. Tyrone should petition the PIAA to investigate this crew and bring legal action if necessary. Of course the PIAA won't do anything except maybe have a "business-lunch" where they can gorge themselves at a buffet. In fact the PIAA should get into event planning because their banquet and dinners are so well organized.

We don't know why the ball was remeasured and we probably never will know. I am sure coach Franco received and explanation, he may not like or agree with the explanation, but I am sure he received one. One of the reasons that are possible for a remeasure is this. It is POSSIBLE that the linesman put the clip on the front of the line instead of the back of the line where it belongs. That would make the line to gain 10 yards plus the width of the line. If the measurement was as close as everyone is saying, then the placement of the clip at the proper side of the line is crucial. The coaching staff of Grove City may have noticed the mistake and asked for a remeasurement. I don't know if this is what happened and I don't know who the officials were, but this scenerio is not out of the realm of possibilities. It is an unfortunate situation and Tyrone feels as if they got jobbed. But look at the other side, if the GC staff pointed out to the official that they made a mistake and the official says no and doesn't remeasure then GC feels they got jobbed. If the ball was not moved before the remeasurement then it was advisable to remeasure the ball, it is better to get the call correct. If the ball was moved before the remeasurement, then I am sure I would have said it was too late to remeasure. It sounds is if this was a great game its unfortunate that everyone has a sour felling now that its over.
