P.C.C. & Neshaminy ~~ WHEW !!!!

Post by THE CHOPS »

Pittsburgh Central Catholic 49, Neshaminy 14
The Associated Press :

HERSHEY, Pa. (AP) — Pittsburgh Central Catholic finished its dominant playoff run with its most perfect performance of the season.

Eugene Jarvis rushed for 192 yards and scored five touchdowns, and the Vikings scored 35 first-half points in a 49-14 win over Neshaminy in the PIAA Class (AAAA) championship game on Saturday night.

Central Catholic finished 16-0 and won its first state title since 1988. It lost last year's championship game to North Penn.

"No one thought that we could go through the season undefeated and beat teams the way we did, but we showed it," Jarvis said.

The game capped two days of state championship blowouts in Hershey. Thomas Jefferson won the (AAA) title by "36" points, Southern Columbia won the (A) championship by 35 points, and Lansdale Catholic took the (AA) championship by 23 points.

The total margin of victory broke the record of 114 points set in 1998.

Certainly, there wasn't much competition, but the winners weren't complaining.

The blowout wasn't all that surprising for the Vikings. Central Catholic posted two shutouts — including a 44-0 win over Bishop McDevitt in the semifinal — during the playoffs and won another game by 41 points.

"It wasn't easy," Jarvis said. "We had a good week of practice. All four days were good and it showed on the field."

Neshaminy, the 2001 state champion, had a huge turnaround after winning only three games last year. But the Redskins (13-2) were brutally overmatched against Central Catholic.

"It looked like we were a little out of sync," said Neshaminy coach Mark Schmidt. "We were trying to hurry too much. We had a bad day, but they're an excellent football team."

The numbers were terribly lopsided in every category for the Vikings, who had a 14-1 edge on first downs and outgained Neshaminy by 230 yards in the first half alone.

How ugly was it ?????????????????????

Neshaminy lost two yards on eight plays in the first quarter.

"We didn't really have an answer for what they were trying to do," Schmidt said.

Shane Murray ran in for a score, threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Jarvis and a 9-yarder to Nino San Doval, and Jarvis added scoring runs of 3 and 18 yards for the 35-0 halftime lead.

The 35-point margin kicked in the mercy rule, which meant the second half was played with a running clock.

It couldn't tick down fast enough for Neshaminy.

It didn't slow down the Vikings either — Jarvis scored again on the first drive of the third quarter. Jarvis later burst through a slew of tacklers at the line for a 35-yard TD run and a 49-0 lead.

The starters came out after that to wild applause and hugs from the coaching staff. Central Catholic's first-team defense gave up only 13 yards rushing, minus-4 yards passing and one first down.

"When playoff time hit, they turned it up a level every week," coach Art Walker Jr. said of his defense. "What an unbelievable performance."

Finally, with the subs in, Neshaminy broke through when Georg Coleman ran 67 yards for a touchdown early in the fourth.

Coleman rushed for 162 yards.

Murray ran for 62 yards and threw for 99 for Central Catholic.

Walker said he couldn't have asked for anything more from his team.

"We clicked at the right moment," he said. "We peaked at the right moment."
