How about fans and cold drinks. It's not exactly wintertime over there.

Count - take a look at a globe. Excluding the islands, a lot of the places hit have a lot of land inland if people choose to move. But you can't evacuate that many people anyway. While the death toll is extremely high and will get higher, you can't say that "most" of the people will die anyway. There's a lot more than a couple hundred thousand that were effected by this.

Immediate help has to include food and clean water. Everything they have is contaminated from sewage. Doctors are needed to help identify and treat disease before it becomes and epidemic. It is too expensive for the US to send over water and heavy foods. It is more cost effective to donate money and have those products purchased closer to the areas effected. The US military is taking over equipment to make clean drinking water.

Last night my children were asking about the number of people killed. To make a long story short...after some research...if you would kill every one in Bedford and Blair county. You still would not reach the total number killed.

i understand what they need. the essentials...but what i'm saying is what are they going to do with the area? rebuild? and if so where are the people going to stay until it's rebuilt?

also a side note...there was no aftershock to this earthquake...most earthquakes do not release everything at once...the aftershocks are often almost as strong as the original quake itself...i think there may still be pressure and stress forming down there and well...if it's rebuilding stress, i don't know if it's possible to go above 10 on the Richter scale...but they may need to make an exception if what i'm thinking is correct.

just another note...i'm not an earthquake specialist...but with a blast that was powerful enough to speed up the earths rotation and tilt the earth off it's access (both very tiny amounts, but still) is that going to push the other plates around it (pacific plate) away and toward the US, if so, do you think bye bye california?

like i said...most of that might just be bull...but i don't know...you guys tell me

That's an amazing stat. Hopefully that can help put into perspective the devastation of this.

Count - I think you'd be hard pressed to find an earthquake expert as a regular on this site, no offense to anyone intended.

That is a really heavy issue.

I wonder if this is even worthwhile for us to contemplate. What can possibly be done to prevent such a catastrophe or to protect ourselves from the effects.
