Coach who allowed disciplined boys to play in Thanksgiving game may be kept

The Associated Press:

CATASAUQUA, Pa. (AP) — A high school football coach who allowed two seniors accused of roughing up a freshman to play in a Thanksgiving game faces a Monday vote on whether to be retained in the position.

Superintendent Robert Spengler said coach Chris Gerhard is being recommended to keep the position, though the decision is up to the Catasauqua Area School Board.

Gerhard is a high school special education teacher who earns less than $6,000 a year for the coaching job.

The boys were suspended from school for five days and from sports for seven days following the Nov. 15 incident during a warm-up session. The suspensions were over before the Thanksgiving game against Northampton, but relatives the victim were upset that the older boys were allowed to play in what they said was the biggest game of the season.

Members of the victim's family said they don't want Gerhard to lose the coaching job. The victim's mother noted that her son signed a petition to keep Gerhard.

However, the victim's mother said the administration should have classified what the seniors did as hazing or assault. Those infractions bring on more severe punishment under school codes.
