District #3 Trinity basketball ~ready for Districts...
Trinity's already thinking districts:
Tuesday, January 18, 2005
It has been a different kind of season for the Trinity Shamrocks.
They haven't had four losses since the 2000-01 season, when they actually went on to win states.
From there, Trinity reached the PIAA Class (AA) championship game three times in the next four years. A fifth trip to the final this year would be quite an accomplishment since upset-minded contenders are lurking on every level.
After breezing through the Mid-Penn Keystone Division as undefeated champs for three straight seasons, suddenly the Shamrocks are pretty much out of the running for that title.
A second-place finish in the Mid-Penn Keystone and a seed to the Mid-Penn tournament is also a longshot.
"I don't know if that's going to happen, we're three games out now," Trinity coach Larry Kostelac Jr. said. "I don't know that that can happen but we'll see what happens and go from there."
Instead, the Shamrocks (9-4, 6-3) are beginning to look toward next month's District 3-(AA) tournament, where they will play for a fourth straight championship.
The Shamrocks could be in for a dogfight with Reading Central Catholic, Delone, York Catholic and Milton Hershey.
All are players in this week's Patriot-News boys' basketball state rankings.
"We've been working at it already," Kostelac said. "We have guys out there looking at all the district teams already. I saw some scouters there tonight; it's that time of year."
The scouts must certainly notice that Trinity's 6-5 junior Brian Morris gets better and better.
"He's a heck of a player," Mechanicsburg guard Jeremy Boone said. "It's hard to stop him. He can go down low or he can step out and hit it three feet behind the [3-point] line."
Morris has grown from cute little brother in the bleachers to floor leader with his 20.3-point scoring average. Also leading with 27 3-pointers, Morris scored 26 in last week's loss to Mechanicsburg.
Matt Wesner scores 14.8 and has 21 threes.
But getting away from the bigger schools in the Keystone Division like Mechanicsburg and Lower Dauphin and amongst Class (AA) tournament teams won't guarantee easier games for the Shamrocks this year.
"We'll regroup and try to position ourselves for the districts," Kostelac said. "We'll see what happens."
Elsewhere, the lineup for Saturday's SportsFever Challenge VII at Stephens Tech has changed again. Central Dauphin is out and West York is in.
Harrisburg, ranked No. #1 in the state, meets No.# 7 Frankford at #6. The Cougars will get a much anticipated look at a Philadelphia-area team.
Then in the 7:30 game, Steel High, the top Class (AAA) team in the state, will play Whitehall, No. #5 in (AAAA) in a fund raiser for the Ryan Mohn fund.
