1/21/2005 -

Amy Johns bumped her head – and it pretty much has bumped the McKeesport girls’ basketball team out of playoff contention.

Johns, a 5-foot-7 junior guard-forward, is the leading scorer in WPIAL girls’ basketball with a 30.0 average. But she suffered a concussion in Monday’s game against Franklin Regional and is out indefinitely.

McKeesport had a big game against Penn Hills Thursday and a win would have kept McKeesport in the thick of the playoff race. But Johns didn’t play and McKeesport lost, 55-38.
Thirty-eight points? Heck, Johns is good for almost that much by herself.

McKeesport is now 3-7 in WPIAL Class (AAAA) Section #2 (7-11 overall). Penn Hills is in fourth place at 5-5 and Woodland Hills in fifth at 4-6. The top four teams from each section make the playoffs.

It is not known when Johns will return.

Ones to Watch

A Division I college basketball player at Shenango? What gives.

It might seem strange, but Shenango junior point guard Steve McNees might be headed to a Division I college someday.

McNees is having an excellent season, averaging 25.6 points a game, fourth-best in the WPIAL.

College coaches can’t comment on individual players on the record, but one recently said privately that McNees is a definite Division I prospect.

SHALER AREA Titans !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!DynamicDuo====================================

Stu Anglum and Nick Sefscik are two of the best players in W.P.I.A.L. Class (AAAA) basketball.

They are a potent one-two punch and it’s funny how their scoring averages are almost identical.

Anglum, a senior forward, averages 17.5, and Sefscik, a senior guard, averages 17.8.

Where are They Now?

Former Upper St. Clair star basketball player Dale Meinbresse has started 12 games for Quinnipiac, a Division I school in the Northeast Conference, which also includes Robert Morris.

Meinbresse is averaging 23.8 minutes a game and 3.8 points.

Bright Future

The Bethel Park Black Hawks are a team to watch in the future of WPIAL boys’ basketball.

Coach Mike Mastroianni’s team has a good shot at qualifying for the playoffs as the No. 4 team in Section 4.

But look for them to finish much higher next year.

Mastroianni has only three seniors on the entire team. He uses four sophomores in his seven-man rotation. They are Mike Papp, Jeff Stewart, Tim Picard and Alex Wojdowski.

Wojdowski is the son of Jack Wojdowski, who played on some excellent teams at Duquesne University in the early 1970s.

“To play this many young guys in Quad-A is hard to do,” Mastroianni said. “It we get into the playoffs with this young group, we’ll be very happy.”

Top Coach Resigns===================================

There has been big coaching news in W.P.I.A.L. football the past two weeks.

It will probably be finalized next week that Lou Cerro will be leaving Seton-LaSalle to become Montour’s new coach.

Earlier this week, the spotlight was on Art Walker, who resigned as Central Catholic’s coach to become North Allegheny’s coach.

But there was other some big Western Pennsylvania coaching news this week – outside the WPIAL. Mike Mischler resigned as Erie Cathedral Prep’s coach.

Mischler enjoyed great success in his seven years with the Ramblers, winning one state championship and making it to the state semifinals in Class (AAAA) three times.

He had a 45-9 record from 1998-2001 and was 61-25 overall.

Mischler did not give reasons for his resignation.

The Honorable King===================================

The honors keep coming for Justin King. He will be listed as a Parade All-American in this Sunday’s Parade magazine.

Also this past week, he was named to the EA Sports All-American team.

The EA sports team includes only 30 players in the entire country.
