Geibel coach one victory from No.# 700
1/26/2005,
The Associated Press:

(AP) — Geibel boys basketball coach Ken Misiak is closing in on his 700th career victory, a mark reached previously by only three Pennsylvania coaches.

Misiak, in his 42nd season at Geibel, is one victory away from joining Pittsburgh North Catholic's Don Graham (801-436), Forest City's Julius Prezelski (757-290) and Northwest's Ed Gayeski (744-195).

Misiak had hoped to get No. 700 Tuesday night, but Geibel, a small Roman Catholic school in Connellsville, dropped a 60-58 decision to Carmichaels.

"It will happen eventually," said Misiak, who, at 68, still teaches physical education and serves as athletic director. "You never think you're going to be in this long enough to get 700 wins. I've been lucky enough to have good players and good people to work with."

The 700th win could come Friday when Geibel plays at home against West Greene, which is 0-18.

Misiak has a career record of 699-320. He began his coaching career at Immaculate Conception High School and was there four years before taking the job at Geibel.

"The wins were few and far between when I started out," he said. "We didn't have our own gym and there were a lot of frustrations."

At Geibel, his Gators won the PIAA Class A championship in 1978 with a 66-53 victory against Darby Township and PIAA District 7 (WPIAL) Class A title in 1980.

This season, Geibel is 14-3 and 8-1 in Section 2-A in District 7. Misiak played for well-known coach Abe Everhart at Uniontown High School and has patterned his coaching style, in part, after Everhart's.

"We used be more uptempo than most teams were back then and I still like my teams to run and rely on quickness," he said.

Misiak has been offered coaching jobs at bigger schools over the years. He considered some opportunities, but always stayed put.

"It seemed like every time I'd get an offer from another school we'd have a pretty good team coming along and I wouldn't want to leave," he said. "It has all worked out for the best."

Misiak doesn't have any plan to retire and still enjoys coaching the high school game.

"Being around the players keeps me young," he said. "I always tell by wife I'll know when it's time to get out and I don't feel that way yet."

WALKER TO NORTH ALLEGHENY:@ Art Walker, who guided Pittsburgh Central Catholic to the PIAA Class AAAA football title, is moving to North Allegheny. He replaces longtime coach Jim Rankin, who resigned after the season.

Walker had a 61-23 record in seven seasons at Central Catholic and won two District #7 Class (AAAA) titles. His "2003" team was the PIAA runner-up. He was selected as the AP Class (AAAA) coach of the year the last two seasons.

While he coached at Central Catholic, Walker taught at West Allegheny High School in Pittsburgh's western suburbs. He wanted to coach and teach at the same school, and will teach English at North Allegheny.

Rankin's Tigers won the PIAA Class (AAAA) title in 1990.
