20-0 Knights still making it look easy

WILSON BOROUGH -- Consecutive victory No.# 20 of the boys basketball season came like most of the first 19 for Pen Argyl Area High School.

Easily.

Mike Bortz and Brad Feller combined for "32" points Friday night as first-year coach George Hicks' 20-0 Green Knights whipped Wilson 58-29 in a Colonial League East Division contest.

Although the outcome was never in doubt, there were a couple memorable moments.

Cal Vogel, a Wilson alumnus who is known as the 90-point man, received a standing ovation during a halftime ceremony. Vogel presented the game ball he scored 90 points with on Feb. 25, 1955 to Wilson athletic director Elaine Arnts. The 90-point performance is the third-most by a boy in Pennsylvania high school history.

Vogel earned the night's only standing ovation but Pen Argyl senior Andrew D'Alessio drew the loudest applause. D'Alessio, a senior reserve who sees little playing time, scored the first points of his varsity career on a layup with 3:30 remaining. The Green Knights' bench erupted and their fans cheered. D'Alessio missed seven straight shots before converting a driving layup.

"It's the first time Andrew's scored it was big," said Hicks, who took over at Pen Argyl after former coach Joe Arndt left to take the head coaching job at Nazareth during the offseason.

Other than those two moments, there was little excitement.

Bortz, a 6-foot senior guard, controlled play in the first quarter, scoring 11 points on five of five shooting from the field. He also assisted on two baskets as Pen Argyl opened a 21-12 lead.

The Green Knights, ranked No. 4 in The Express-Times region, parlayed a 9-0 run early in the second quarter into a commanding 30-14 advantage.

Bortz led Pen Argyl with 18 points, Feller contributed 14, and 10 players totaled at least two points.

"Coach Hicks said if we started strong and kept it going there'd be no 8 o'clock practice Saturday," Bortz said. "Myself and Steve (Waring) both were hurt the first time we played Wilson and we didn't get a chance to play. I tried to play hard enough for both of us tonight."

With the win, the Green Knights maintained their -game lead over Notre Dame in the East Division. Pen Argyl is 15-0 in league games while the Crusaders are now 15-1. The rivals meet Tuesday night in Pen Argyl.

The defending District #11 Class (AA) champions face several tough tests next week against Notre Dame, Northern Lehigh, Bangor and Pocono Mountain West. A 4-0 week would mean the Green Knights go into the league playoffs with a 24-0 record.

"We're back in the division again and it's nice to play our rivals," Bortz said. "If we can't get up for these games, we can't get up for any games. It'll be fun next week. We'll get to see what kind of team we have."

"I'm looking forward to it," said Hicks, whose son, Tim, is one of the Green Knights' starters. "I really hope the Notre Dame game isn't as foul-oriented as it was first time. We want to play good defense with our feet and we want it to be a good game."

Wilson (6-15, 6-10) ends its league season against Bangor and Notre Dame.

Matt Rush led the Warriors with six points. Wilson made only 11-of-46 shots from the field and committed 22 turnovers.

"What we can take from this loss is we can look at their skill level and try to build ours to that level," Wilson coach Bob Frankenfield said. "Brad Feller is a perfect example. He went from not playing much as a junior to being one of the best players in the league. He did it with hard work. That's exactly what our kids need to do."
