Sharon Area High School Academic Casualties !!!!

Post by THE CHOPS »

A reading of Sharon's academic casualties this season- I just found this out and thought I would share it.

I just happened to get a copy of Sharon High School's % grading scale:
97-100 A+
96-95 A
93-94 A-
92-90 B+
88-89 B
85-87 B-
82-84 C+
79-81 C
77-78 C-
74-76 D+
71-73 D
69-70 D-
0-68.99999999 "F"
ARE YOU KIDDING ME... IS THE TOUGHEST IN MERCER COUNTY???

So in other words if Johnny gets 10-15 right on his quiz and that's his only grade he can't participate in Spanish Club or Basketball!!!!!

You can have some dud kid getting all D minuses in bonehead English, general math, and everyday science and he can play sports.

Then you can have another student getting all A's in AP Calc, AP English, Spanish level 5, and gets 10-15 on the only test in Physics and they can't play in the basketball game Friday night or go to his Spanish Club meeting.

Are they (meaning the administration and school board) trying to encourage the kids to participate in extra curricular activities or discourage them from being involved... because with that rule and that grading scale it looks to me like they are DISCOURAGING them. Why?

The PIAA has had the rules of eligibility and I believe they have studied the matter more than any single district.. so my question is where is the data on this topic, and why haven't they (school board or administration) shown the effectiveness of this rule.
Oh I forgot Sharon is an Academy now.
Do they (school board and administration) know how stupid they look for having this rule (10 out of 15 means no playing) and the newspaper for printing "academic casualty"?
I know Sharon is holding their students to a higher standard. Well they can tell that to their students when Johnny doesn't get into Harvard because he has a 3.9 GPA and instead take Jimmy from Hickory because he has a 4.0 GPA but the same percentages in the same classes.

Oh how stupid they look. So the next time you read "academic casualty" the kid might not be the stupid one.

I don't understand why the grading scale shortens near the bottem of the scale
92-100 A
82-91 B
77-81 C!!!!
69-76 D!!!!!!!

I don't understand why a kid would flunk due to a grade below a 69, 72 is the lowest C you can get at most other school, minues 3 percentage points and your failing at Sharon, something doesnt seem right, i believe that PIAA should put a percentage eligibility into place instead of the letter grade scale they have now, because right now a student with a 69 percent at Conemaugh Township can participate in sports, but a student at a school where academics are held to a higher standard and classes are tougher, who has the same percentage, cannot participate. That needs to be changed, the PIAA needs to say any student with lower than a 62 percent in 2 classes cannot participate.

And some schools grading scales go 90,80,70,60,50. so a student at that school could still participate with a 60 percent can still participate, something needs changed.

A 69% where I teach is failing; a 70 is the lowest passing grade.
