Westmont Girls in first loss ...
Westy handed year's first loss ...
SHIREMANSTOWN - Jodi Hillegass found her team in a position they haven't been in much lately.
Down by four with time quickly melting away, Hillegass saw Kaitlin Urban and Kristen Maurer miss four consecutive shots, and as time wound down, Katie Lintner miss one more.
In a game of runs, it is usually the hotter team that finishes the game strong. The Delone Catholic girls did that, Westmont did not.
The end result was a disappointing 53-46 setback to the Squirettes at the PA SportsFever Challenge, the Hilltoppers' first loss of the season.
"We got in foul trouble and they hit the shots when they needed to and we didn't," Hillegass said.
The Hilltoppers held a lead for most of the game, but in crunch time, the two-time defending Class (AA) champs, who were knocked against the ropes, responded with a fury of baskets in the final quarter and half.
Maybe it was a little rope-a-dope, or maybe it was just pure execution on the part of the Squirettes, either way, they got it done when it counted most.
"I credit them for hitting those big shots," Hillegass said. "They've been in that situation before and we haven't been in that many close games."
Westmont got off to a solid start, jumping out to an early four-point lead on free throws by Alison Buchan and a basket by Lintner. Delone managed to cut the lead and eventually tie the game at the end of the first.
By halftime, it looked as though Hillegass' team would run away from the Squirettes.
Down 16-14 with 3:56 left in the first half, the Hilltoppers went on a 10-0 run during that span to end the half with the lead, 26-16.
More impressive though was the 4-for-4 shooting to end the half by the Hilltoppers, who made 8 of 12 shots in the second quarter.
When the Hilltoppers extended their lead to 30-16 to begin the third quarter it looked as though this one would be wrapped up quickly.
But then Delone showed up.
The Squirettes went on a 12-4 run to pull within three to end the third quarter.
Westmont extended its lead slightly but Delone sank 9-of-10 free throws down the line to ice the game.
"After we settled down, we started playing much better," Delone coach Gerry Eckenrode said. "I thought they (Westmont) played really well for two and a half quarters."
"I think we were the better team, but they knew what to do when they needed to," Hillegass said. "I think we're fine if we keep playing the way we do with our tough defense, we've just got to tweak a couple of things."

Re: Westmont Girls in first loss ...
