W.P.I.A.L Boys Basketball Playoff Picture

With one week left in the high school basketball regular season, here is an update on the WPIAL boys basketball playoff picture through Monday, January 31st.

Every WPIAL boys playoff basketball game can be heard beginning with the Playoff Pairings Show on Tuesday, February 8th ONLY here at msasports.net

Class (AAAA) - SECTION 1:

Albert Gallatin Colonials (9-3) clinched

Uniontown Red Raiders (8-4) clinched

Latrobe Wildcats (8-4) clinched

Albert Gallatin can clinch a share of the section title with one more win and can win the section outright with a pair of victories

Norwin (7-5) has a one game lead over Connellsville (6-6) in the battle for fourth place

Norwin is at Connellsville on 2/1 and home to Penn-Trafford on 2/4.....Connellsville is home to Norwin on 2/1 and at Hempfield on 2/4

A tie between the Knights and Falcons would put both in the playoffs


Class (AAAA) - SECTION 2:


McKeesport Tigers (11-1) clinched

Baldwin Highlanders (10-2) clinched

Penn Hills Indians (8-4) clinched

Pittsburgh Central Catholic Vikings (8-4) clinched

A McKeesport win at Woodland Hills on 2/1 would give the Tigers a share of the section title

Baldwin needs to beat Franklin Regional at home on 2/1 and win at mcKeesport on 2/4 to gain a share of the section crown.


Class (AAAA) - SECTION 3:


Shaler Titans (9-3) clinched

North Allegheny Tigers (9-3) clinched

North Hills Indians (9-3) clinched

New Castle Red Hurricanes (8-4) clinched

All four teams that have clinched have a shot at the section title

Shaler is at Pine-Richland on 2/1 and home to Fox Chapel on 2/4.....North Allegheny is at Fox Chapel on 2/1 and home to North Hills on 2/4.....North Hills is home to Butler on 2/1 and at North Allegheny on 2/4.....New Castle is home to Seneca Valley on 2/1 and at Butler on 2/4

Head-to-head tie-breaker:
Shaler 4-2
New Castle 3-3
North Allegheny 2-3
North Hills 2-3


Class (AAAA) - SECTION 4:


Upper St. Clair Panthers (11-1) clinched

Mount Lebanon Blue Devils (10-2) clinched

Chartiers Valley Colts (10-2) clinched

Bethel Park Black Hawks (7-5) clinched

Upper St. Clair needs only to win at Peters Township on 2/1 OR beat Mount Lebanon at home on 2/4 to claim a share of the section title


Class (AAA) - SECTION 1:


Knoch Knights (9-1) clinched

Hampton Talbots (9-2) clinched

Mars Planets (7-3) clinched

Valley Vikings (5-5) clinched

Knoch needs only a victory at home against Valley on 2/1 OR a win at Mars on 2/4 to clinch a share of the section championship

Highlands (4-7) can make the playoffs with a win at home against Kittanning on 2/4 AND losses by Valley to Knoch on 2/1 AND to Deer Lakes on 2/4.


Class (AAA) - SECTION 2:


Moon Tigers (9-1) clinched

Hopewell Vikings (9-1) clinched

Moon plays at Hopewell on 2/4 with the section title or a share of the crown up for grabs

in the battle for 3rd and 4th place, West Allegheny (6-5) is at Montour on 2/4.....Ambridge is home to Hopewell on 2/1 and at Blackhawk on 2/4.....Blackhawk is at Ellwood City on 2/1 and home to Ambridge on 2/4

In head-to-head:
West Allegheny is 1-1 vs Ambridge, but 2-0 vs Blackhawk
Blackhawk beat Ambridge in it's earlier meeting.


Class (AAA) - SECTION 3:


Yough Cougars (10-2) clinched

Greensburg-Salem Golden Lions (10-2) clinched

Laurel Highlands Mustangs (10-2) clinched

All three teams have a shot at the section crown: Yough is at Brownsville on 2/1 and home to Mount Pleasant on 2/4.....Greensburg-Salem is at Laurel Highlands on 2/1 and home to Brownsville on 2/4.....Laurel Highlands is home to Greensburg-Salem on 2/1 and at Belle Vernon on 2/4

Belle Vernon (7-5) has a one game lead over Mount Pleasant (6-6). Belle Vernon is home to Derry on 2/1 and home to Laurel Highlands on 2/4.....Mount Pleasant is home to Indiana on 2/1 and at Yough on 2/4

If the Leopards and Vikings tie for the final playoff spot, both teams would clinch


Class (AAA) - SECTION 4:


West Mifflin Titans (11-1) have clinched a share of the section title

Elizabeth Forward Warriors (9-3) clinched

Thomas Jefferson Jaguars (8-4) clinched

West Mifflin needs only one more section victory or an Elizabeth Forward loss to clinch the section outright

Waynesburg (7-5) has a one game lead over Keystone Oaks (6-6 in the fight for fourth place. Waynesburg is home to Thomas Jefferson on 2/1 and at McGuffey on 2/4.....Keystone Oaks is at Steel Valley on 2/1 and home to South Park on 2/4

If the Raiders and Golden Eagles tie for the final playoff spot, both teams would clinch


Class (AA) - SECTION 1:


Jeannette Jayhawks (12-0) have clinched the section title

Greensburg Central Catholic Centurions (9-3) clinched

West Shamokin (8-4) has a one game lead over Burrell (7-5) in the fight for third place, however Burrell needs to win twice and have West Shamokin lose twice since the Bucs lost to the Wolves twice this season

West Shamokin is at East Allegheny on 2/1 and home to Apollo-Ridge on 2/4.....Burrell is at Freeport on 2/1 and home to East Allegheny on 2/4.


Class (AA) - SECTION 2:


Farrell Steelers (11-0) have clinched the section title

Shenango Wildcats (7-3) clinched

Laurel Spartans (6-4) clinched

Mohawk (4-6) still has a shot at the playoffs

The Warriors must win at Laurel on 2/1 AND win at home against Riverside on 2/4 AND have Laurel lost at Shenango on 2/4.


Class (AA) - SECTION 3:


Quaker Valley Quakers (11-0) have clinched the section title

Bishop Canevin Crusaders (7-3) clinched

Brentwood Spartans (7-4) clinched.


Class (AA) - SECTION 4:


North Catholic Trojans (11-1) have clinched the section title

Shady Side Academy Indians (7-3) clinched

Wilkinsburg (6-4), South Allegheny (5-5) and Riverview (5-5) are all alive for a playoff spot

Wilkinsburg is at Shady Side Academy on 2/1 and home to South Allgheny on 2/4.....South Allegheny is home to North Catholic on 2/1 and at Wilkinsburg on 2/4.....Riverview is at Northgate on 2/1 and home to Shady Side Academy on 2/4

Any two-way or three-way tie would clinch a playoff spot for all teams involved.


Class (AA) - SECTION 5:


Washington Little Prexies (10-1) have clinched at least a share of the section title

Fort Cherry Rangers (8-2) clinched

The winner of Southmoreland (7-4) at Burgettstown (7-3) on 2/1 clinches a playoff spot while the loser is eliminated.


Class (AA) - SECTION 6:


Beaver Falls Tigers (12-0) clinched

Aliquippa Quips (11-1) clinched

Center Trojans (8-4) clinched

Beaver Falls is at Aliquippa on 2/1. If the Tigers win, they clinch the section title outright. If the Quips win, the two teams will likely share the section championship

Rochester (6-6) can clinch a playoff spot with a win at home against Center on 2/1 AND a win at Monaca on 2/4 AND a Center loss at home to Aliquippa on 2/4


Class (A) - SECTION 1:


Cornell Raiders (10-1) have clinched the section title

Sewickley Academy Indians (7-3) clinched

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Chargers (6-5) clinched

Union (5-5) has a one game lead over Western Beaver (4-6). Union is home to Western Beaver on 2/1 and at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart on 2/4.....Western Beaver is at Union on 2/1 and home to Monaca on 2/4.


Class (A) - SECTION 2:


Carmichaels Mighty Mikes (10-1) clinched

Geibel Gators (9-1) clinched

California Trojans (7-3) clinched

Avella Eagles (6-5) clinched

With one more win, Carmichaels can clinch a share of the section title, while Geibel can also claim at least a share of the section crown with two more victories.


Class (A) - SECTION 3:


Serra Catholic Eagles (9-0) have clinched the section title

Monessen Greyhounds (5-3) clinched

Frazier Commodores (5-4) clinched

Clairton Bears (4-4) clinched.


Class (A) - SECTION 4:


Duquesne Dukes (8-2) clinched

St. Joseph Spartans (8-2) clinched

Vincentian Academy Royals (7-3) clinched

Leechburg Blue Devils (7-3) clinched

All four playoff bound teams have a shot at the section title

Duquesne is home to Vincentian Academy on 2/1 and at Springdale on 2/4.....St. Joseph is home to Elderton on 2/1 and at Vincentian Academy on 2/4.....Vincentian Academy is at Duquesne on 2/1 and home to St. Joseph on 2/4.....Leechburg is home to Greater Works Academy on 2/1 and at Elderton on 2/4

Head-to-head:

Leechburg 3-3
Vincentian Academy 1-3
