Notre Dame Green Pond on a roll !!!

Post by THE CHOPS »

N.D. poised to win Colonial East Division...

Notre Dame High School of Green Pond, with a win over archrival Wilson tonight, will clinch the East Division title and enter next week's Colonial League tournament as the No. 1 seed on a 12-game winning streak.

Coach Pat Boyle's Crusaders are 19-3 overall and 16-1 in the league going into the final night of the regular season.

Notre Dame owns a one-game lead in the division over Pen Argyl, which is 20-2 and 15-2.

Even if the Crusaders lose at Wilson tonight and Pen Argyl beats Bangor, Notre Dame would be the top seed. The two teams are deadlocked on tie-breaking criteria, but the Crusaders won a coin toss during a league meeting.

Coach George Hicks' Green Knights, who won their first 20 before losing their last two, will be the No. 2 seed.

Catasauqua is the West Division champ at 15-8 and 13-4. Coach Eric Snyder's Rough Riders will be the No. 3 seed.

Southern Lehigh, with a win tonight over 1-21 Salisbury, will clinch the South Division and the No. 4 seed with a 13-5 league mark. If -- and it would be a minor miracle -- coach Bob Shaffer's Spartans lose to Salisbury and Saucon Valley beats Palisades as expected, Saucon Valley would be the division champ and fourth seed based on criteria.

So, barring any minor miracles, the Colonial League boys basketball tournament semifinals will match No. 2 seed Pen Argyl and No. 3 Catasauqua, and No. 1 Notre Dame and No. 4 Southern Lehigh. The semis tip off Tuesday night at Bangor Area High School in Upper Mount Bethel Township.

Pen Argyl vs. Catasauqua will be the 6 p.m. contest, followed by Notre Dame vs. Southern Lehigh at approximately 7:30 p.m.

The league's championship game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at Liberty High School's Memorial Gymnasium. The boys final will follow the girls 6 p.m. championship game.

BECAHI BOUNCES BACK: Bethlehem Catholic can clinch the Blue Division and a Lehigh Valley Conference playoff berth with a win tonight over Easton.

Coach Jim Hutnik's Golden Hawks are 16-7 overall and 11-6 in the league. They lead Parkland, which is 12-11, 10-7, by one game in the division standings. Becahi and Parkland split two regular-season meetings.

Becahi has won five consecutive conference contests while Parkland has lost three of its last five LVC games.

Hutnik's Hawks likely will qualify as the No. #4 seed and could match up against longtime nemesis/probable No. #1 seed Central Catholic in the semifinals. The semis are tentatively set for Wednesday night at Allen High School's Milo Sewards Gymnasium (providing Allen fails to qualify for the tournament), as is Friday night's final.

Whitehall has clinched the Red Division crown; Central Catholic has clinched the White title. Emmaus, with a win tonight or an Allen loss in one of its final two games, would be the conference's wild card.

NOTRE DAME NUGGETS: In the past seven days, senior star Chadd Lilly scored the 1,000th point of his career at Notre Dame while senior manager Dan Villanti scored his first six.

Lilly reached the milestone marker in Tuesday night's 85-72 victory over Pen Argyl. The 6-foot-2 senior swingman totaled 33 points and now has 1,019 for his career.

"It was a big game, an emotional situation and there was the pressure of Chadd needing 14 points to reach 1,000," Crusaders coach Pat Boyle said. "A lot of his family members were there and I'm certain Pen Argyl didn't want him to get it on their home court. We were concerned he might press, but the good thing about Chadd is he's more focused on winning the game than scoring points."

Last Friday night against Bangor, Lilly was concerned about Villanti, who is as dedicated a team manager as there is anywhere in the Lehigh Valley.

Boyle planned before the season started to make Senior Night a special one for Villanti.

"Danny went out on the court before the game with his parents in a suit and tie," said Boyle, who included Villanti on his preseason eligibility list. "When we came in the locker room Chadd and Dougie (Weaver) presented him with a uniform and told him to suit up.

"Chadd insisted that Danny start in his place. I was originally going to bring him off the bench but Chadd insisted he start. Dougie got an offensive rebound and could've put it back in, but he passed out to Danny who immediately hit a 3 to give us a 3-2 lead. It's the first time I ever let a kid look into the stands and wave his arms. It was nuts."

Villanti, a 5-6 guard who is a member of the Crusaders' baseball team, later stroked a second 3-pointer (bank shot) and made both of his career field-goal attempts.

"He's as much a part of this team as anybody. He's going to DeSales and he wants to do the same thing for them. I told (DeSales coach) Scott Coval that Danny will be his No. 1 recruit," Boyle said.

MY 12 CENTS WORTH: Pen Argyl will win the Colonial League crown. The Green Knights rebound from Tuesday night's loss to Notre Dame and Wednesday night's upset at Northern Lehigh to beat Catty in the semis then defeat Notre Dame in the final. Coach George Hicks and senior leader Mike Bortz prove the team's 20-0 start was no fluke.

Whitehall will bounce back from Tuesday night's 53-49 loss to Central Catholic and win its second consecutive LVC crown. Coach Jerry Radocha's Zephyrs and coach Ron Hassler's Vikings, as expected, win in Wednesday night's semifinals and square off for the third and final time in the conference's championship showdown.

Watch out in the District #11 Class (AAAA) tournament for coach Doug Snyder's Allen Canaries. Snyder's squad is playing well and talented junior Terrance Roderick is capable of carrying the Canaries. Allen beat both Parkland and Emmaus during a five-day stretch in the last week.
