Baseball's big spenders

Post by fleaflicker »

I found an interesting artice that states that the average salary of a baseball player is now 2.6 million, and the median salary is $850,000.

But here is the interesting part, and the part that I am concerned about. The New York Yankees, with a payroll of 206 million dollars, are spending more money than 5 other major league teams combined. Tampa Bay, Kansas City, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, and Cleveland combined spent a total of 187 million dollars for their roster.

The Red Sox spend more than 3 teams (121 million), as did the Mets (104 million). The Phillies and the Angels spend 95 million, which is over twice as much as the any of the bottom five spent in a year, and 3 times as much as Tampa Bay spent this year. So much of success in baseball is tied to how much money a team is willing and able to spend, especially with no salary cap.

What are your thoughts on this?

i guess this is america. so spend spend spend. but it sucks to be a pirate fan. maybe i should take the same course of action as many of my bleacher coaches alumni and bandwagon jump on a high salary team.
NEVER!!

There needs to be a cap in baseball. I just pray that Bill Gates never becomes interested in owning a baseball team. They will never loose. In all seriousness though, there is no way a small market team can compete. You can't build a team because once players reach a certain status, a small market team can't keep them because the Yankees will pay them a billion dollars a year if they want them bad enough! I just think it would make baseball a lot more competitive across the board if they developed a salary cap.
